Well the first thought is whether you would drill out an oversized hole and have a poorer connection. I suppose you could water drill down to below services level and then bang it in from there.

That really requires that one knows what would be "below services level". In my neck of the woods, assumptions about that could sometimes prove to be wrong!

I would expect the hole, having been made by turning soil into runny mud, would soon collapse around the rod?
