Why use caulk at all? Filler comes in the same tubes at the same price and can be smoothed with a wet finger too. I honestly can't see any reason to use caulk.

Can it be purchased in easily applied tubes like caulk is, for applying to long lengths of skirting?
Caulk stretches when the wood shrinks; filler doesn't.
Of course. You'll probably find it on the same shelf in the store.
