My front lawn suffers from lots of over-hanging trees etc. resulting in moss, where there is no moss there are weeds. Am wondering about the plastic stuff, the site has a bit of a slope, but gets very little wear.
Any advice on cost, practicality, type to lay etc most welcome.

There are two types, one is hardwaring and designed for walking areas, not suitable for a play area as the blades can cut skin. The other is softer and far less lilkely to cut skin but wears when walked on by people wearing shoes.

The best artificial lawns look very good, impossible to know the difference...the type that has a few brown bits.

No good for lawns if you have dogs -the lawn starts to smell of Wee. Prob not an issue with a front lawn

A friend bought a house with a plastic front lawn installed by the previous owner.
She was annoyed to discover that, althiugh she din’t have to mow it, she did have to brush it quite frequently. So not the zero-maintenance option she hoped for.

Surprised she doesn't run the vacuum over it on a high setting. LOL

The moss and weeds will end up growing in the plastic grass too, I can't imagine it being too hard to clean it though.

OK my grass really won't have any-one on it regularly, what sort do I need (just for decoration really)

hi..I have had artificial grass for 3 years now. I got mine from b&m and it's 35mm and tricolour. I would highly recommend it. As mentioned above, yes it can smell if animals urinate on it and not washed down afterwards. I think I've only brushed it a handful of times as it really springs back into shape. you get little weeds growing on top, but you just keep on top of it and it will be ok. It depends on the stuff you want as prices vary. The cheapest stuff looks like fuzzy felt.

It all depends on the preparation your garden needs as you might have bad draining soil etc it's not cheap I would imagine a builder would charge you around £40-50 a square meter to have it done. I'm now getting my front done and it's 20m2 and working out £399 for the artificial grass itself before and ground prep.

The mother in law has it in her back garden. The cheap sh1te - looks like a greengrocers barrow.

Thanks for replies, looks like £60 per sq metre for the whole job.

60 quid?! How much of that is installation?

I came here today to make a similar thread, but while we're already discussing it... I got a pack of 6 samples from an online site a mate used. They range from £12/sqm for the crap stuff, up to £22 for the real nice stuff.

I have to say, the £22 stuff looks really damn good. I only need 37m² but that's still 800 quid on its own... I'll be fitting it myself!

My reason is that when we moved here, the garden was already knackered from previous owners having a bitch - and I have one too, so now it looks like something from Mad Max. I figure if I strip all the existing turf out, bang a membrane down, sand on top, then the artificial grass, it should minimise issues of pee smells. I have a pressure washer so I guess a wash a couple of times a year would keep on top of it...? Can't be worse than it is now.

Pro tip to anyone looking to get a canine: get one with a knob. We have a boy and a girl; the boy was with us 3yrs before the bird, and our old garden was mint.

Ultimately I'd avoid going for the mega cheap stuff as it really does look like cack (unless you're not fussed, in which case crack on).

Man, the thirties are a weird age. 10 years ago I spent my money on vinyl and soft drugs. These days I'm stressing over fake grass and the Clematis being late this year.

Honestly wouldn't change it for the world! Much more stable, and less sweaty kids waving glowsticks around. The idea of an 8pm to 8am rave these days makes me want to curl up in bed with a brew and my dogs (oh, and the wife...).

Have a good one!
