installer- not vat reg-discount for 50% cash

Just wondered, new boiler quote by installer, not registered for vat, offers a few hundred pounds off quote price if 50% paid in cash. should I be wary of this?

Just remember he'll be paying vat on all the stuff he buys but if he's not charging on his bill you'll save 20% and if you can trust him,that's what it comes down to at the end of the day do you trust him.If you don't then don't hand over any money,you know what that say if it seems too good to be true then it isn't.Bob

thanks oilboffin, I don't know him well enough to say If I trust him, I wouldn't have to pay anything until the work is completed so that should be ok.......shouldn't it? I can pay normally but his quote comes out similar to other quotes £2500-£2700 ish .(most other installers are charging vat) If he doesn't pay vat -apart from the boiler- then the price of the job should be cheaper anyway?

I'd be concerned about any supplying installer that isn't vat registered.

There are a few reasons why he may not be vat registered though Dan. My first concern would be is he up to doing the work correctly and registered to do so.

I wish they would go after the bigger fish first, guess that is too time consuming though.

I said "supplying" fur a reason. If he is supplying materials and paying himself a decent wage then a decent installer will be going over the threshold very easily.

I know plenty of engineers who "fit only" to avoid vat registration, but that is a different thing

I know a sparky in his 50`s who works 3 days a week, chooses his work and comes in just under the threshold every year

Sparky material bills are a totally different kettle of fish anyway, plus, warranty implications are less compared to hearing and plumbing.
