weird valve?

Can anyone identity this? It looks like the only thing connected to the rad.

It is indeed a very old Danfoss twin entry Thermostatic valve, you would be better replacing it and fitting a valve at each end
 
Not only that, it looks like the body part of a TRV. But I can't see how the head would be attached, unless it has jaws which open up and close behind the flange when something's tightened.

Yes, I found the head -

. It seems like the system is also single pipe and the valve has a bypass if the TRV turns the rad off. If there a modern equivalent of this?
 
yes the body on the valve has slots and the plastic TRV head clicks into these and then the small screw at the bottom is screwed in and that ring compresses the plastic jaws to lock it on
