Mk2 Kuga Powershift (title edited)

For sure Keith, goodness knows what we are buying from motor factors.....we just hope (and pray if you like) that we are getting top quality gear.
I have the same issue with oils.....my factor supplies Fleetmaster, Morris, Carlube, Mannol.....you name it.
Certainly in your instance perfect oils and filtering is as much as you can do.
Cheers for the update, and keep the wheels rollin’
John :)

Just took a "Volvo" one apart, the filter gauze has a nylon mesh "support".

The genuine one has a stainless steel mesh to stop the filter collapsing.

They've put more time into making the box look genuine than the "filter"..

Don't know wether to be happy I've found an issue or pxxsed off that I've been sold knockoff filters..

Who knows? I think more importantly than the plastic core would be the quality / quantity of the filtering medium.
On the few burst filters Ive seen, the paper has released from the end caps.
If the Volvo filter is bogus, its a bloody good one!

It's 100% fake John, no question about it unfortunately.

From now on I'm keeping a genuine Ford as a quality control and comparing every replacement to that one.

Had a quick look at the "Volvo" ones before they went in, no obvious signs from the outside they were counterfeit and didn't occur to me to destroy one to find out!.

On a plus note I've got 5 known good ones to use, should last a while!.

If the filter medium has collapsed due to inadequate support, the bypass hasn't opened correctly (far too stiff) it's a recipe for disaster. Luckily due to fresh oil the gearbox has survived.

Much more confident in the car now.

Well, that absolutely sucks - thats all I can say
Dealer parts every time for these.....price doesnt matter considering what you have been through.

Just hope this helps other people in the same boat.

I have had "Transmission Limited Function" on the genuine Ford service kit but never as badly as it it before I took it to bits, the knockoff filters aren't the whole fault but deffinitely exacerbated them..

I've heard of this problem before, so out of interest I watched a certain review on You Tube where a guy in the States cut open two brand new Fram filters, straight out of their boxes. I was appalled at what was revealed & this from what I always thought of as a premium brand

Only problem is I'd bought Genuine filters (always do!), turns out they were counterfeit unfortunately..

Found a good source for genuine Ford kit now at reasonable prices (half what my local stealer wants) so will only buy from them from now on!.

Well it did 450 fault free miles then the wife text me last Monday to say it was playing up again.

I've narrowed the fault down to Clutch Shift Modulation Solenoid 1, but these are not available as a seperate part unfortunately.

I found a brand new Mechatronic unit for £1060 so bit the bullet..

Unfortunately these come "blank" so I had to remove the Transmission Controller off the old one (married to the car) and swap them over.

I found a company in Poland that can rebuild the solenoids so I may end up sending the old ones to them for testing (didn't have time this time.).

Took Wednesday and Friday afternoon off work and managed to get it done in 8 hours this time. Lovely holiday laid under the Kuga..

If it goes wrong again I will be taking the sledgehammer to it I think..

Only saving grace is I've saved on labour costs (Ford is over £100 an hour now!).

We shall see..

Oh hell the stakes are getting high now....
Surely there is somewhere in the UK that can sort the solenoids - much easier to check up or even visit them?
I guess you are in a real quandry here.....you cant trade the vehicle in its present state so you have to bash on.....lets hope this sorts it!
Regards and be lucky

Not giving up just yet!.

Heard a few people have used UK "specialists", one had his valve body inspected for £300/ £400 and it was worse when he got it back..

I might send the old ones off to Maktrans in Poland for testing, they have made a dedicated rig to test under normal operating conditions with a graph of performance, voltage etc.

Looking at their graph of a failing solenoid it looked exactly like how our car reacted, stepped rather than smooth clutch operation.

At least then I've got a spare valve body ready to go..

Seems garages just throw clutches at these 'boxes regardless from what I've been reading, not realising the solenoids are soley responsible for clamping pressure.

Just wondering why the thing goes for a good few miles without problems, and then reverts to its old tricks.....I mean, it shouldn’t be temperature related and it hasn’t done enough work to get contaminated since your last investigation therefore the solenoids should still be sweet.
Just sticking new clutches in shouldnt make any difference.
You would think that there would be specialist firms able to cope with these things now - didnt they come about in 2003 or something?
Do the gearbox and metchatronic use the same lube?
John :)
