I’ve just had my front door and sidelights delivered and i’m looking to join them with aluminium couplers.

To my untrained eye the couplers look wrong. If they were to fit they would have to squash the 2 inner fins of the upvc profile.

Can anyone offer some advice?

Thanks :)

This ones supposed to be a super strong structural coupler. I’ve sent the picture to the supplier to see what they say.

If I google ‘Rehau aluminium coupler’ I get no results showing anything similar.

What i’m after is an aluminium section to join 2 upvc Rehau frames.

The pieces i’ve been given don’t look right to me.

I can’t find any info on Rehau aluminium couplers on the Internet.

No that looks right, on the left of the coupler it has two shoulders, with the frames roughly in place and on top of the sill slide the coupler between the frames till the shoulder of the Ali touches the frame then fix through all 3 OR fix the coupler to one frame to start with fixing one way then offer the other frame to it and fix through that frame into the coupler

So it isn’t meant to click into the frame like these plastic ones do?

Seems a poor way to add strength by having an extra piece between. With the basic plastic coupler I could still fix the metal in the door frame to the metal in the window frame.

It just butts up like this:

Yes just butts up doesn't clip in, theres a multitude of couplers, the ones you have are heavy duty and are the business

Hmmm, they seem crap to me but i’ll take your word for it (y) I think they would be better with a shoulder on each side so they can’t be pulled out of position.

What the best way to fix them? If I use a Baypole (saw you mention them when I searched) would I drill a bigger hole in the PVC so the screw head is against the aluminium, then plug the hole?

No, they go through the softest material first and bite into the ali so through the pvc first into the ali, go from each side in toward the coupler

I would even hazard a guess and say they aren't even rehau couplers but so long as they're 70mm they'll work

So if I drill a 5mm pilot hole through the pvc and metal in the window/door then fire a baypole through and let it drill its own hole in the coupler?

Would the head pull through the pvc or would it only do that if I overtightened it?

Would a baypole from an iron mongers be better quality that ones from Toolstation?

You can let the baypole make its own way throught the pvc but it won't hurt if you pre drill its entirely your choice. Toolstation baypoles will be fine and don't over tighten, just till it starts to distort the frame and maybe a turn more, they won't pull through at that

Ok, thanks very much. I’ll pre drill the pvc and metal in the door and let the baypole drill the coupler to make sure it pulls itself tight to the frame.

Top man, otherwise you'd probably have to quickgrip while you drill (y)

Should I be fixing down through the cill as well?

The door will have those aluminium spacers on each side and along the top.
