Hi all. I'm guessing this will be an easy Q to answer for the pro's so here goes:-

My gas meter is currently in a wall-mounted surface box with pipework exiting the bottom, then heading upwards and through the wall into the house.

I'm having a lot of renovations/reworks done and as part of this, I would like to get the meter fitted into a semi-recessed box as A, I think they look a lot better and B, they don't stick-out half as much as the surface mounted boxes which would give me a bit more room on the walkway around the front of the house.

I would like the pipework from the meter to go straight out of the back of the box into the house so no pipework will be visible from outside so I thought if I look at the spigot position in the box, I could figure out if the box will be able to go over the existing pipework entry position through the wall, meaning that a minimum of work has to be carried out internally.

Seems like an easy proposition I suppose but the problem lies in that the pipework entry is currently between the two windows at the front of the house for the bedroom and the living room so I'm guessing that there will be loads of different rules and regs relating to the siting of the boxes ?

I've looked online at the meter box suppliers but the only specs I can find are HxWxD, nothing about spigot positions or placement regs.

So, before I start to consider getting in touch with the suppliers/builders/plumber, can anyone point me to an online source so I can check to see if it's even gonna be worth getting the job done ?

TIA

Maybe actually have a look at a meter box and note the spigot location. selco sell them and they are on the self service shelf ,check stock before travelling.https://www.selcobw.com/built-in-gas-meter-box-white
placement regs
for a start the gas service pipe supplying your property needs to be a low pressure service, nothing else :!:

calling in a suitably qualified gas installer is recommended. Cost, did few last year not much change from £1200 (London) (y)

Thanks for the reply H&C. Unfortunately that link you gave me doesn't show any dimensions other than sizes and I'm nowhere near any retailers that have them on display :(. I have a local builder that can fit the box for me (He installed a supplementary electric box for me) and a plumber that can do the gas hook-up but if I read the information I've found correctly, and I understood my plumber correctly, Northern Gas Networks will have to do the external pipe rework to the new meter box and then I will need a meter fitter to actually connect the meter. Then the plumber can connect up to my existing pipework ?

I know it's not going to be cheap, I think Transco want about £700 or thereabouts and then there will be the meter fitters charge. My plumber has given me a (very) rough quote of between 2 to 300 for his work so I'm prepared for the costs but I just wanted to make it as unobtrusive as possible as I hate to see copper pipework running outside.

Also, I want to make my subsequent boxing-in of the pipework internally as easy as possible come the time.

Are the meter boxes a standard sizing as one of my neighbours has one fitted that he may well allow me to take some measurements off. ?

Thanks again.

yes,the link does not show spigot information. That why a visit to a merchant was mentioned.

Other builders merchants (not diy sheds) sell these items, there must be one close to your location :!:
Your neighbours meter box could have been manufactured by various companies ie hepworth, mitras, tricel and a few more, they also have different versions ie MK1 MK2 etc.
Maybe ask the above companies for some technical information

Your plumber should be able to advise on the internal gas alterations, consider running some outlet pipe underground better still employ a registered gas installer that has the ticket to do pipework & gas meters.

seems a straight forward job(y)

Is your plumber a Registered Gas Installer?

Sorry for the late reply FiremanT, was out doing the fortnightly shop . Yes, the guy is Gas Safe Registered, he's done work for me before and is very handy as he lives locally :D

I also see that on the page that link points to, there's an option to ask a question so I'll do that - thanks (y)

Asked the question on that BES link FiremanT and they answered with the spigot position so thanks for that (y) Looks like the box can be fitted in the right position outside to get shut of all the external pipe run so I'm a happy bunny. Just need to get the work booked in now with Northern Gas Networks and the meter fitter. :D Didn't think of asking the plumber if he's registered to move meters so I'll have to remember to ask him when he's back from Bulgaria.

Ah well, that answers that question, he doesn't have the certificate for meter moving :( Shame really coz when you get someone you trust, you don't wanna go anywhere else. there are a couple of people not too far away however that have got the necessary certs so I'll have to ring them forra quote.

Thanks for the link FiremanT (y)

Well, thought that was that but apparently not - lol. Northern Gas Networks can do a Partial Reconnection when they do the work which if I've got it right means that they can reconnect the meter for me once they've done the service pipe work. Sounds good but.........can my plumber connect my internal pipework to the meter or is this part of the meter moving certificate ?

The descriptions on the gas-safe site are a bit vague to someone who isn't in the business (i.e. me !) so would I still need someone other than my plumber to connect to the meter once NGN have repositioned it in the new recessed box ?

Basically, I'm trying to keep the guy I know & trust doing any work for me and to be honest, I can't see someone really being too happy at getting a job just to connect a wall-thickness length of 28mm copper pipe to a meter when my plumber will have done most of the best earning work already.

Wish I'd have thought of all these questions before my plumber went on his hols

Thanks as always

to be honest, I can't see someone really being too happy at getting a job just to connect a wall-thickness length of 28mm copper pipe to a meter when my plumber will have done most of the best earning work already.

I have always said that no job is ever too small - but my quote may be too big.

Well, I got a nice surprise in my inbox today. Got a reply from NGN re: the service pipe work.....£474 :D I was expecting somewhere near £700 to £800 judging by other people I have spoke to. Maybe it's because all they will have to do is joint the new pipework 2M from the house in my garden and run it to the new recessed box ? That's with a partial reconnection as well where they refit the meter to the service pipe. I'm well pleased with that.

My builder has said £20 to fit the box (that's coz he usually gets his dinner while he's here on the other bigger jobs I've had done so I always get a good price (y))

Just gotta see if my plumber can connect to the new meter position and get his price. Should be less than £1K which is great :D

Another nice surprise.........thought I'd ask how much a full reconnection would be to save having to bother my plumber and it came back as £522, so only another £48 (y)

Might as well get NGN to do all the work in one day. Got some info off the building forum as well and they say a dpm isn't required, just bung a cavity tray above the box. they also suggest a lintel but why, I don't know as there's only gonna be three bricks weight on the box but, those guys know more than me so I'll suggest it to the builder and see what he says.

All in all, not bad I reckon.

Mebbe Ofgem have had a go at the transporters about excessive charges made or summat.
