Need a bath for a rental. So need one that is tough and hard wearing.
Any brands or makes as I should go for?

Carronite - available from all good merchants!
Use a steel bath, practically bomb proof and cheap too .... if it gets chipped, then it comes out of the deposit.

Look at Trojancast baths. Very sturdy with a 30 year warranty.
They seem well priced indeed. So I have read a bit about carronite from recommendation above, I assume this is similar quality?
Is the bath panel also reinforced? On the diagram it says 35mm.
Would I be able to get this from a local plumbers merchants - one of the bigger chains?
They do a light and a reinforced panel. Pay the extra for the strong one.
Yes, very similar quality to Carronite at a lower price. As JohnD says, they're very heavy due to their solid construction.
You may have more luck with a local independent merchant than a big national, although the Bathroom Supastore prices are hard to beat. Plumbase sell them under their Suregraft brand - look at the "Suregraft Cast" ones which are rebranded Trojancast. They're expensive if you don't have an account. City Plumbing can get them in theory but they're special order in to the branch and again they're likely to hit you hard if you don't have an account

they're very heavy. I injured myself lifting one on my own.
Strong and rigid. But don't let the tiler drop anything in it and damage the surface.
Make sure you're looking at the price of the reinforced one. The same bath, basic, is much cheaper, and not as good.
I got the best price from ordering mine. Think it was a supplier in Darlington. Might have been the one in the disused chapel on the hill. but it was delivered from the factory's distributor.

If you get an odd-shaped bath, it may be very difficult to get a replacement panel if the original is damaged.
