My 20+ year old washer dryer has been stopping mid rinse cycle. It also won't go into the final spin anymore. The drum doesn't turn anymore, not even when using the dryer. The motor makes a noise though. I've removed the top and back cover to have a look. The drive belt is fine and turns the drum when I manually rotate the belt. It's also draining water so I guess the pump is fine. Though I have to mess around turning the dial to different rinse cycles before it finally decides to drain the water. Also, the machine had tripped my fuse box a few times.

I've removed the two carbon brushes. There are burn marks on the white plastic of one of them, and the carbon looks degraded around the edges on one of them and it also falls out of the white casing. The other stays with the white plastic. But the length of carbon left looks long enough to work doesn't it? Also, the plastic casing around the connector clips are burnt. Will replacing the brushes fix everything?

Well I've got my eye on a £369 Samsung Ecobubble. But, as this is a washer dryer, might be nice to keep it if it's a simple fix.

They are the extra hard laminated brushes that overheat and stick in the holders. Try a normal set C00251802.

Ok, I phoned them and it's the part for WD21P I need. It comes with a black holder and a white holder and I need the white holder. They sell a pair for £19. But I'm seeing them on espares for the same price and faster delivery I think so I'll call espares.

EDIT: just ordered next day delivery from espares, £21.98. Now I just hope they fix my machine!

I haven't used the dryer in my washer dryer for years, but does anyone have an idea of what it approximately costs me to run the dryer for say, an hour? I never even considered it before, but someone recently told me it's quite expensive?

If it is a 3kW drier, which is usual, it will cost around 45p per hour, depending on your tariff

If you have solar panels, it can reduce on a sunny day, sometimes down to zero.

If you get a Heat Pump drier it uses much less electricity, but costs more to buy and may go wrong more. It will take some years to recoup the higher purchase price in reduced electricity bills.

Washer-driers have a reputation for not being as good as a washer, or as a drier.

Thanks for that info, JohnD. I don't know what type of drier system is likely to be in my washer drier, but there's a label on the back that says kW 2.4-2.8, so I guess that's about what you mentioned. 0.45p give or take isn't bad actually and I wouldn't really need more than an hours drying per wash. Given that I wouldn't need to use it between may and september as I dry them on the line outdoors, I reckon that would only be about £12 to £15 a year. And in fact, I often hang clothes to dry on the radiators in the colder months, so could be less than £10 drier bills.

JohnD, if I decide to buy a new washing machine, I'm considering the Samsung Ecobubble. Would you recommend it? As opposed to buying Hotpoint, Hoover, Beko, Indesit? And what about Kenwood washing machines, are they any good?

Don't know. Personally I usually get Bosch.

Or look at Which reviews.

You can use either, the white ones will be the same as the failed ones you have. The black ones are softer C00251802 and will give you a better chance of a lengthy repair.

Ah well, too late, it's arriving in the couple of hours.
Two places I checked said that C00251802 isn't compatible for my model which is why I wasn't confident on getting them. Anyway, I hope these ones work. I think I might need to check the commutator contacts first and maybe clean them up with some fine sandpaper.

The carbon is the same length on the new ones as the old. So my old ones weren't worn. I fitted the new ones and no difference. Waste of £22. Only once did the drum turn a few times in both directions in between filling with water. I've not been able to get it to turn since.

What's happening is that I start a wash cycle or rinse cycle, it fills with water, then goes silent for ages with nothing happening, and it gets stuck. I have to turn the dial for something else to happen.
I also hear some clicks, and often a loud buzzing noise. The drum never turns. It does eventually drain the water so I can open the door. Also, the dryer is just making a loud buzzing and nothing happening.

I'm lost. It could be a capacitor, maybe circuit board, maybe a blockage, who knows. I think I'll have to bin it.
