I'm replacing gate valve on cold feed @ my brothers house next week and i am expecting it to be a bit of a fiddle to get the old gate valve out and the new gate valve in (i'm putting a peglar lever valve in), and think i may need to cut a bit of pipe to get the new valve on.

Is there generally much play in the pipework to enable me to fit the new valve? Any tips on what to do?

Cheers

It depends really, each installation is different. If you can release the pipe from the clips then pulling the pipes away from the wall a touch can allow the valve to be slipped on but how much they can be 'teased' out without causing a problem is an experience thing. Alternatively, depending on how it feeds from the cistern above, then there could be play up there. Hard to gauge without seeing it.
