Golf GT 1.4 TSI 140 PS 7-speed DSG, of 2014 vintage. The car has just turned 42k miles.

The owner, a friend of my wife's, reported a "horrendous" knocking noise. A garage has diagnosed the flywheel as the problem, but she's not best pleased about what is going to be a very expensive job at such a low mileage!

Interestingly, the garage are puzzled by the lump in the photos below, and say it must have been a manufacturing defect. I'm wondering if there's something inside there that has let go and dented it from the other side?

Is anyone on here familiar with these things, please? Do DSG Volkswagens have DMFs? If so, is 42k a "reasonable innings" for one?!

Strewth, I’d suggest that one of the damping springs within has broken loose and wreaked havoc.....why though, I’ve no idea.
If keithmac sees the post he’ll have more clue I think.
John :)

Take the flywheel to a VW dealer and see what they say.
Some of them are very good at convincing head office that they need to repair as gesture of goodwill.
(They get paid)

You should be thankful they designed it with an external DMF and not the internal mess Ford came up with for the Powershift!.

It does look like a DMF, I don't believe the DSG has any internal dampers.

On the bright side at least the gearbox is ok, could be far far worse.

It's dry clutch packs, maybe worth inspecting them while the box is out as they wear out far quicker than the oil bathed wet clutch on the higher torque DSG unit.

Why anyone would create a dry twin clutch transmission is anyones guess (Getrag Ford have done one as well)

It's a fairly distant friend, so I won't have the pleasure of getting involved. A VW dealer has taken it out and sent the photos. As Johnny2007 suggests, they are going to try and get some sort of goodwill gesture out of VW, in view of the low mileage. They're the ones who think it's a manufacturing defect (the bulge in the pressing), but I'm not so sure. That said, if it gets her some money off, I'm happy to let them try! I'm just curious as to what really happened.
