Help required please - trying to swap randal 4033 timer with hive

good evening everyone,

I hope someone can help me i have recently bought a hive timer and thermostat and decided to try and replace the randal 4033 timer myself as it sounded pretty simple swapping over wires. I followed a wiring diagram off here off a previous post but i think ive gone wrong somewhere as when i turned electricity back on the programmer lights up when you press the central heating button and the pump starts pumping but the boiler does not ignite. I have a room thermostat downstairs which i set to high to try and test system. Please see some pictures i have attached. Look forward to your replies.

this is what i went by an old thread from this site:

L on 4033 to L on Hive
N to N
E to E
2 to 4
4 to 3
5 to 1 if there was a wire in 5
There probably won't be a wire in 3 on the 4033 you shouldn't need a wire in 2 on the Hive.
There was probably a link between 1 and L this can be discarded.
Could you have the CH on on it's own?
Or did you have to have the HW on for the CH to work?
If you also have an existing room thermostat this will need to be dealt with. Post back if you do for further instructions.

Hi Alex, that wiring center is a bit bonkers, you also have a green/yellow as what looks like a switch live, which isn’t good practice. Did you take a photo of wiring before you started? Tbh it might be best calling someone in to get you up and running and sort that wiring center out.

if you put the HW on with the hive does the boiler come on ?

Yes mate, I had to read it about 4 times before it sank in he’s linked what he’s done with an older post, and like stated the programmer was a red herring.

Hive call it a receiver because that is what it is, it doesnt programme anything, with the system you have the Hive does not control the boiler or the pump directly, your system controls the motorised valve(s) either Y plan or S plan and they in turn control the boiler and pump, does the boiler fire when you ask for HW ?

ok fair enough you are the experts i'm new to this really as just moved into my own house. im sure i checked the water and it did the same thing but ill recheck again after work.

To be honest this is what happens when you look at similar posts, there are loads of configurations , depending on the boiler , the set up Y plan or S plan, add as many pics if you can, control valves boiler wiring , hive wiring and you will get the best advice

thats how i wired it moving from the randall 4033 to the hive .but maybe as you said that might be incorrect for the system that i have s or y systems ?

sorry but in the words of the dragons "I am out " the 4033 can be wired as S plan, as Y plan as Gravity , as W plan just showing us a diagram of the wiring plate of it means the square root of diddly squat, you will have to tell the guys what you actually have, if you want the correct advice , supply the correct information
