Hi everyone,

We live on a busy road and high ground too. It's gets very cold during winters and the old double glazed windows are around 18yrs old now and not insulating so well or reducing the road as much.

I've been given two quotes for windows, both K-Glass. For double glazed, the u value is 1.2 and for the triple glazed, the u value is 0.8. Being honest, I don't know if this is a huge difference in terms of keeping heat in or not, so any tips would be much appreciated.

The triple glazed are approx. 20% more in price difference.

Could you please advise whether it's worth going for the triple glazed and based on the u values, is it worth paying the extra price for the triple glazed?

Thanks for your help.

Found this:

The energy savings from switching from single to double glazing are considerable, but the difference between a U value of say 1.4W/m²k (double glazing) and around 0.8W/m²k (triple glazing) is much less and would account for perhaps 5% improvement in the overall energy performance of a new house. (Windows conventionally account for around 20% of the overall heat loss.) Translate this saving into pounds sterling and you might expect the switch to triple to save you between £20 and £40 a year on heating bills depending on the size of your house.

Thanks very much diyfun and Harry. I've already got double-glazing. It's just they are now old and is not in the best of state. Therefore I just want to know whether it's worth replacing my windows which will cost £1500 for DG or £1850 for TG. The windows are A-Rated, K-Glass.

I appreciate it's only 5% in heat savings, but will it help more with road noise having TG?

I don't think it's a simple Y/N answer, this is just one website however look for the section 'Triple Glazing Noise Reduction' it gives various pointers as to what makes good and not so good triple glazing from a noise reduction perspective.
