I picked an old fan hoping to use it in the workshop. It'll run and gives decent airflow but it won't start. If I power it then it buzzes, if I give it a little nudge it spins nicely. I wondered if it needed a capacitor but I tried a couple, rather blindly, in a couple of different configurations without much luck. Can anyone suggest a suitable wiring arrangement? There are 4 wires from the motor earth/blue/brown/black. There is a chance it is faulty, too, I suppose.

Yes, funnily enough I've seen that. It doesn't give a suitable value for the capacitor and I couldn't get it to work. Hoping for a more practical answer on here from someone who knows motors, even if that is just proving the motor is kaput

The label on the motor says 2uF 450 volt so a 2 micro Farad capacitor would be needed.

If fitting a 2uF capacitor as shown in the circuit diagram does not make the motor start then the odds are the motor is kaput.

As Bernard says.
If it's a salient pole motor the salient pole could be cracked. Otherwise it may have shorted turns on the start winding and giving it a spin by hand overcomes the start problem.
Neither problems are a DIY fix.

Go back to your pic of your wiring then compare that to the PDF. The blue wire of the motor is Live, Black is neutral and a cap in between. Maybe a clear head and start again?

EDIT: Oops

Black is neutral, blue is Live according to this PDF:
