I'm considering laying artificial grass, is it a must that type 1 mot sub base is laid down first on soil?

Could i just lay down 50mm grano dust followed by a weed membrane and then the artificial grass?

At my last house I used grit sand to level soil, put a membrane on that then the fake grass. No issues.

I’m doing some now and plan to do it the same way but inside a timber frame of 3x1

How long have you had it down?

Initially I was planning on using sharp sand, but it appears that grano dust is more preferable?

I'm assuming on your last house you used U pins to secure the perimeter of the grass? that is what i intend to use but not sure how secure/reliable they are?

Why have you gone down the timber frame route?

What depth of sharp sand did you lay?

The last lot was down a couple of years before we moved, it was on maybe 30-40mm of sharp sand that was on soil. Grano is more like mini MOT so would be better.

I nailed it to a timber surround and I chose timber because it’s easy and cheap.

At this house, I only bought the grass yesterday. I’ve paved 600mm out from the house and fixed my first timber in place. I might have to make up 3” here, I’m not sure yet but if it is that much I probably would use MOT first and a thin skim of sharp sand over the top.

This is the bit I’m doing now just outside the window:

I've got alot of ground to cover which is 8.50 x 7.50m 68m2!

It'll come in 2 lengths 4m wide by 8.5m long

What grass size/spec did you go with? I'm looking at the 40mm grass

I’ve got a budget 40mm roll end for this bit but in a couple of other parts of the garden I have a more expensive 40mm which is better looking.

I got all of it from Facebook marketplace, the better stuff was supplied incorrectly to a woman near me but the supplier didn’t want it back so she sold it cheap.

Lucky you! I'm shopping around eBay, online sellers etc quotes ranging from £650 to £1200!

If i were to put grano dust down what depth would you recommend? If its 50mm ive calculated I'll need approx 8 jumbo bags!

There used to be ( and probably still are ) two types of artificial grass.

(1) soft and realistic looking but not designed for areas where there would be a lot of foot traffic as it wore out quickly. Good for children's play area

(2) hard and looked less realistic but tough and hard wearing intended for areas with a lot of foot traffic.

Type (2) caused a lot of cuts to bare skin if people fell over on it.

It your ground is good and firm then I’d go with 50mm.

Agree with Ian H , just membrane and grass over my front lawn, out back already had hard standing so straight on with grass .The grass available these days is very realistic and very hard wearing and soft enough for the kids . Mines been down two years and shows no sign of wear .(I am lucky as son in law works in carpet warehouse so get top end grass cheaper than the cheap stuff from the sheds).

At the minute the soil is on uneven ground, im using a tiller to dig up the soil, so it'll be loose soil, once levelled i plan on doing the following:

Wacker plate levelled soil
Apply weed membrane
50mm grano and wacker plate over
Apply weed membrane
Lay artificial grass

What do you think, is that the right approach?

I'm thinking double layer of weed membrane will keep the weeds at bay, belt and braces approach

Is it acceptable to lay the grass on flat ground? or should there be a slight fall/gradient to avoid pooling of rainwater?

I would get rid of the loose soil and then wacker your grano.

The garden is on a rising slope and also had a lot of overgrown weeds and stumps i had to remove which is why the soil is no longer compacted, once I've levelled it out, will compacting it back with a whacker plate not be sufficient?
