This weekend I have re-instated the garage door which the previous owner had blocked up with a frame insulation and plaster board, leaving the garage door in place.

Now I've reinstated it I've realised how much space I lose from the up and over door, I cannot have shelving where once there was.

The door is also really cheap fibre glass on a metal frame Though the locking mechanism is good quality I don't think it would take much to break in.

So I'm now looking for a roller garage door.

The prices seem to vary substantially,

I want a double skin insulated aluminium roller door electric, with brushes in the runners to keep wind at a minimum.

I've found this company who are amazingly cheap, I was all set to ring then up and then 2nd guessed myself, they have 10/10 for reviews, the review sites all seem to start from 2019 which I'm guessing the company must have started, the reviews seem over enthusiastic IMO

What's your thoughts?

I've been on my local Facebook page aswell asking for recommendations and a chap who lives in my village said he can have a look, will be speaking to him tomorrow, but I don't think he can offer what I'm wanting when looking on his company site.

They have a company & VAT number and a physical address, so are probably less dodgy than most. Call them or visit if local if you are unsure.

and a pair of remote controls? If you are prepared to fit it yourself, then they can be had much cheaper. Mine, as above, was around £500 - it was all cut to size, slats assembled as a roll with motor and ready to fit. Fitting can be done by two, in an easy afternoon the most difficult part is locating the door slats into the slots. I supported it over a scaffold tube.

This was to replace an up and over, which itself replaced a pair of heavy wooden doors. I have been delighted with it for the past ten years.

I installed a Rollexa about 1985 and the new owners of the house are still using it.

Rollexa ceased trading in 2016. I was told that a company called Rolux was staffed by ex Rollexa employees ( but no proof of that )

Yeah don't mind doing it myself, but if I bought the door they don't supply the nice finishing trims if I fit it.

I'm confident enough in fitting it. I'm sure it can't be that hard.

Just had someone out and he reckons it be about 2k supplied and fitted....

I was thinking £1500 for a branded door and fitting

What nice finishing trims?

It is really not hard at all. Cost depends on height and width, but all of the companies use the very same components. Rather than an installer, get a price from a supplier (where the installers buy their kit from), for a complete kit of all that is needed.

The branded doors are all around £1100 for the door, SWS and gliderol, horman are horrendous.

Then there are the company's that say they make there own which are £800 or less, rollador look quite good.

I think you will find they are all the same actual door components. What might vary is the actual electronic control unit. My door is exactly the same as the one from Crocodile on TV. When they say 'they make there own', what they mean is they cut the insulated door laths and the side guides.

Thanks that's what I was afraid of, usually if it looks to good to be true it is..

Nothing worse than paying up front for an item, only to have the company go bust before you get your goods. I paid on collection for mine, from a supplier in Scunthorpe.

Now looking at DIY'ing it.

Ripped part of the ceiling down, the garage originally had a flat roof the house has been extended and a pitched roof installed, unfortunately they e left the old flat roof in place along with the old joists for the flat roof. Looking at the construction I can remove the joist closest to the garage door, as it's currently cut away from the wall where a steel lintel has been installed.

I'd like to fit the roller shutter door behind the lintel, but how would I fit the box to the lintel?

I can fit (only just) a small roller 205mm box without the box showing externally.
