Bathroom basin tap in my elderly Fathers house has started to deliver an explosive burst of water.

When first turned on, briefly no water comes out, it splutters, then it delivers a brief burst of cold water; from then on, it will operate normally and does so throughout the day but will randomly deliver its explosive burst when turned on.

This only occurs with the basin cold water tap, not the hot tap or the Bath and kitchen taps.

Any idea as to what can cause this and how to fix it ?

Yeah, I thought an air lock of some kind but was confused with it only occurring on the one tap in the bathroom.

No cold water tank and the cold water supply is from the main.

There’s a Combi boiler in the kitchen.

Don't know what " insert" is. The valve is what allows water to flow / stop when operating the tap and is within the tap body.

Sorry, thought they were called inserts....
So it’s the valve within the tap.

Thanks
