A Conservative has spoken out about the struggles of living on an MP’s salary, calling it ‘desperately difficult’ for some. Sir Peter Bottomley, the ‘Father of the House’ as the oldest MP in the Commons, has spoken out about his struggles as a politician.

His comments come as Universal Credit cuts officially start today, after the Government decided to remove the £20-a-week uplift which was introduced during the coronavirus pandemic.

It's interesting that he states, in his opinion, GPs are paid 'far too little' at roughly £100k pa. I wonder what he reckons they should, on average, be paid. The phrase 'far too' indicates a lot more, perhaps £150k+.

Whilst not for 1 sec defending him, surely a lot of this comes down to lifestyle? If he's struggling on £80k pa, have they (his family) drawn in the purse-strings to make the £80k go further? MMmmm, I wonder ...

I doubt they would understand what that means. He said his wife quit her job to run for local MP on IOW, and says he has 2.5 dependent children - he's 77, and his kids were born in 1967, 1969 and 1980. So, youngest is 41.

He's having a laugh!

Hes a Tory - thats what they do.

Its regarded as very insulting to voters to say that they didnt know what they were voting for, so the opposite is to say that they did want this sort of person in Parliament, especially all the first time "Red Wall" voters who looked at the party, the sort of people in it, what it stood for, and thought "thats for me".

His wife also claims for the Lords. In 2018 she claimed £110k.
She is also a director of BUPA.
As a couple they own three houses and also own a property company

My local GP has been inaccessible to me for the last 18 months, he appears to do f**k all rather than organise recorded messages telling me I'm 'number 35 in the queue' and the evidence is plain to see in hospital waiting lists, referrals etc.

Is he worth 30-40K more than an MP?

Instead of moaning, you should look at the reasons…..and they can be found in the way you vote.
There are massive shortages of GPs

partly due to Brexit - we had lots from EU.

oh and Tory politics - make universities privatised, so they become profit centres. Anybody with a brain would realise if you want more GPs, more nurses offer free training and better working conditions

MPs should earn far far more.

then they should remove all second jobs and all lobbying….then we might have less corruption

Do you think all UK GP's of EU origin went back home with the seasonal fruit pickers and hospitality staff because they weren’t earning enough to live here full time?
