Remove Fireplace ?

I would like to remove our fireplace and block of chimney leaving a flat wall after bricking & skimming.

As the the chimney stack needs ventilation would putting an Air brick in the loft chimney stack be Safe and legal ??

That can be done, but the work may need to involve an SE and Building Control - you cannot simply demolish the fireplace, leaving the chimney unsupported.

There was a Gas back boiler fitter into the fireplace, Looking at the fireplace it seems to be fitted on the outside of the wall not offering any support to the stack.
