I have had my kitchen replastered so now it is time to paint.

Some folk say, even the plasterer .. PVA and water mixed should be painted on the ceiling and walls first, but others say a thin watery emulsion mix is best.

If the latter, thin paint .. is it Ok to use kitchen paint / water mix, or should it just be plain emulsion and water.

thanks !

For your first coat use none vinyl based Matt emulsion watered down 60/40 paint to water. Plenty of good cheap options.

Vinyl based comes with a sheen, or harder finish I'd imagine your kitchen paint is vinyl based so don't use it as your mist coat as it doesn't adhere great to fresh plaster.

While PVA will seal your fresh plaster it will reactivate when you apply your paint which is why you don't use PVA.

never put glue on a surface that you hope one day to paint

PVA is water soluble. First it turns to jelly, then it washes away.

Emulsion paint contains water. The glue will prevent it soaking into the plaster and firmly adhering.

A few old plasterers still suggest it, but most have been killed by angry decorators.
