... but it's not mine :(

Logged into my account and instantly thought 'wait a minute, my balance looks a fair bit healthier than usual?!?'

Was slightly surprised by the banks reaction (phone call not in branch.) The guy sounded so laid back he must have been horizontal.

'Yeah, you probably don't want to spend any of the money. It can take us up to 15 working days to rectify erroneous deposits. Someone will call you. If nothing's happened by the end of the 15 days, contact us again and we'll look into it.'

I know it's not mega-bucks, but I'd have thought their processes would have had a bit more urgency about them. There again, I suppose I might just discover it's been removed again in the coming days.

I hope they sort it soon cause I can tell looking at the transaction ref that someone will be waiting on that money. Plus jokes aside, I'm not saying the bank guy didn't do this, but there wasn't even a mention of 'I've put a note against your account saying you made contact regarding this.' I'm probably over-thinking it, however I'd be a bit p1ssed off if they discover the error x days later, assume I've not attempted to inform them, and freeze my account or something.

My local branch is open tomorrow, I might pop in to reiterate things.

Happened to a family member and they reported it. Nothing happened so they spent money.

Someone laundering ill-gotten gains, or hiding Russian assets?

I think I'd put your concerns in writing to your account holding branch.

Also I believe they should contact you before (attempting) recovering the money.
For what it's worth I have the receipt from my bank for a bill I have paid by electronic means (in branch) today - There is a note on the receipt, quoting "once the payment has left your account it cannot be recalled" i.e. if you have sent the money to the wrong account you have probably lost the money as the bank won't help in recovering the money. (And people wonder why I like cheques!)

Buy some Crow. If it goes up tesp the rewards if it goes down then just suck it

That is odd though. I assumed this was with all banks now, but for me to make a payment with Barclays I need to not only put in the sort code and number, but it needs to match a business name or private name before I can proceed. This should mean it is almost impossible to pay the wrong person.

That ties in with the bank guys advice. He mentioned something about 'someone from the bank will contact you ...'

Based on the details I can see within the transaction itself, the sender appears to be a legitimate source and, assuming there's nothing untoward going on, I can see how the error has possibly been made. Obviously don't want to go into details.

Needless to say I'll be checking my account daily.

Ok it's just a turn of phrase, it was the way the guy said 'you probably don't want to spend any of it ...' and I sat their thinking 'no sh1t Sherlock' :)

you will probably be contacted under the guise "we just want to see if your getting the best from your account" sales call
