Cars with no noise.

At work before moving it is required to blow horn or whistle, the bells are no longer fitted, as now they do not travel down the street, but when they did a bell had to be sounded on the engine all the time it travelled through the street.

Seem to remember when the flying Scotsman went to USA it had to have a bell fitted to comply with their regulations.

As to white noise, it sounds too much like the safety valve opening no one would associate that noise that noise with a vehicle moving, that is a normal sound where I live for the railways engines letting off steam in the station, what a daft idea to emulate a steam train safety valve.

The problem is we have over the years got to recognise the sound, I stopped in Spain trying to work out who was talking to me, and nearly got run over, as a wagons reversing beeper instead of beep beep beep was saying in Spanish beware I am reversing, had a sales man try to sell me one in the UK, but when the boss asked how it knew if to speak Welsh or English he had no answer, beep beep beep is far better universal language. As to hiss hiss hiss, that's daft, too many items make white noise.

As to the push bike or in my case e-Bike again a problem, ring ones bell and people jump, in my case blowing the horn people don't expect bikes to have horns, and be it a bike about to pass a pedestrian or a car passing a bike, to ring bell or blow horn just before passing is likely to make people jump and cause rather than guard against an accident.

Although there is quite a winding noise from my motor on the e-bike, people tend not to hear it, saying good afternoon as one approaches seems better than a bell or horn, blowing the horn is seen as being aggressive.

The main problem with the e-bike is the anti-motorcycle bars on cycle tracks means I can't have mirrors as then bike will not fit through the bars, any mirror less than my body width I can't see past my own body, these View attachment 280372 effectively stop cyclists having mirrors. Even pedestrians have problems View attachment 280373 and they don't stop motor bikes anyway, so rather pointless. However until banned there is a problem Sustrans does give assess sizes, and at 1250 mm width I could have handle bar mirrors, however there is a second problem for me, getting my bike on the train, even when bike bends in the middle I can't get the bike into the carriages except for the special adapted disabled carriage. And even on the veranda to close gates on the carriage I need to fold the bike, so again a problem if I fit handle bar mirrors. So sound is the only way to know when some thing is behind one.
People get used to beepers and ignore them too. Much the same as car alarms.

No it's not, but is seems people maintaining bridal paths etc. Have no idea of what a bike can get through, not even sure about a horse?

It was the main route, it says so on the badge. This was a canal tow path by the way.

You really are exceptionally dull in your imagination, and lacking "feel" for everything in life.

A constant drone of white noise will not work. A white noise that plays yankee doodle came to town will work. A white noise between these extremes will work some what.

For some to rely on tire noise to warn is the stupidest thing ever. There would be tire noise from the head-on traffic on the other side. This will mask any tire nose coming from behind. Also the human ear is not suitable for listening for threats from behind. So, it's quite a miracle not more cyclists are killed. When I go past cyclists, I usually give them a whole lane's width and I go slow. I know those f****rs can't hear a thing.

Everyone should be danger aware at all times.

When on the pavement I look out for fellow pedestrians and cyclists. I often cannot see a car reversing of a drive until it is on the pavement. Legally, the onus is on the car driver to ensure that they are "danger aware", and not the pedestrian.

No one is stupid or trying to cross the road in this thread. So, we wouldn't know.

The OP had the car sneak up on him. I had the car sneak up on me. No road crossing was involved. The reason the OP created the thread and the reason I am talking about it is we both know it was so close to THE END.

Cars are inanimate objects they can’t sneak up on anyone.

Fair enough, that is quite tight. Round here, we're blessed with quite a good network of dedicated cycle paths, because West Cumbria was massively industrial, 100 or so years ago. Obviously, long gone, post-Beeching (some disappeared even before Beeching)! These are an absolute Godsend, because Cumbria is bloody hilly and some kind navvies did all the hard work, creating a path with shallow gradients for steam trains to run on!

Maintenance is a shared (I'm not quite sure how) responsibility between the local authority and SUSTRANS - which, of course, means that neither does it (or both do it) because they seem incapable of talking to each other. The biggest problem is that one of the main ones has loads of tree roots that have pushed the tarmac up, right across it, into very sharp ridges. At best, you get punctures. At worst, I'm just waiting for my carbon front forks to snap, next time I hit one with my road bike! It's almost untenable on a road bike now. Full-sus mountain bike is still OK, just uncomfortable.

You really are an absolute foghorn of ignorance, aren't you?! Anything that "plays" anything can't be "white noise", can it?! The whole definition of white noise is "noise containing many frequencies with equal intensities"! You even posted a video of a vehicle reversing alarm with white noise. What "tune" was that playing?!

Look, it's dead simple. The (largely white) tyre noise from an ICE car, travelling at a constant speed and light throttle opening (just as it might do when driving along a road, passing a cyclist or pedestrian) is what warns said cyclist or pedestrian that there is a vehicle nearby. If there are many vehicles, he doesn't stop hearing them, he just doesn't know which is which, but that's OK, because each and every one of them could do him harm, so it doesn't really matter which one he's listening to. Electric vehicles making a similar noise (a combination of artificially generated noise and tyre noise), will sound much the same. In fact, that's the whole bleedin' point of the AVAS regulations.

In the situation where the cyclist or pedestrian is travelling along an empty road and a vehicle comes up behind him, the largely "white" noise coming from it (be it mechanical noise from an ICE car or artificial noise from an EV) is just about the BEST warning he could have, because human ears are great at determining the direction from which white noise is coming from! This is exactly WHY the reversing alarm in your video clip, is white noise, rather than the traditional "bee-beep" that reversing alarms used to make!

And unless they're travelling at high speed, in which case they'll hear a lot of wind noise), or are wearing headphones (in which case, they deserve all they get!), cyclists can hear just fine. Every bit as well as any other human being!

Here we still have steam trains, and cycles and trains don't mix. In theory I can take the bike on the train £3.50 same as a dog, but during Winter not many trains run, and only one carriage can really take a bike without folding it, so any wheel chairs and we are stuck.

I can just about get to Welshpool and back with a 12 Ah 48 volt battery to assist me, it is darn hard work getting up the Golfa bank, even with the motor, so try to do at least one direction on the train. But it is a fast road, one guy I volunteer with has been knocked off his bike, and I don't want that to happen to me.

The armco barriers are worrying, bad being knocked through a fence, being trapped between a car and armco barrier is good by life. I think they should be banned on shared roads. The wagons are OK, they always leave space, and you can hear them, it's the car drivers who cause the danger.

Many emergency vehicles now incorporate white noise into their sirens so as we can work out which direction they are coming from - it really is amazing how well it works, our ears / hearing system is quite remarkable in its ability to work this complexity, but it does. I guess the original siren sound is to let you know its an emergency vehicle, and the white noise gives direction and speed.

And yes cyclists can here any vehicle 20mph and more very easily just from tyre noise, can even work out when the vehicles starts to slow down (which is great as that signifies they have probably seen you). The big problem with hearing on a bike is wind noise, and riding into a strong wind is not only unpleasant due to the effort required - it also removes your ability to hear vehicles approaching from behind which is quite unpleasnt, and no matter how often you look over your should someone will suddenly pass when you were not expecting it.
