Bottom of door is rubbing

Got a door rubbing on the bottom. Do I have to take it off and cut 5mm off the bottom or is there a way to cut this off in situ?

Take the screws out of the top hinge on by one, pack the holes with match sticks, retighten the screws. If that doesn't do the trick, then door off, onto the trestles and plane it in - just remember to mark where it is rubbing with a pencil before you take it off.

And to answe your question, no, there isn't an easy way to shorten the bottom of a door in situ without making a hash of it (and anyone who want to say use a jamb saw, please don't go there)

Have you checked whether or not it likes it first?

It's so quick and easy to remove a door (a minute, with a cordless? Maybe 5 minutes if you have to chisel old paint out of the heads), and soo much easier to plane when you do that I wouldn't even try to fix in situ..

If you determine that it need planing rather than it having dropped; open the door to 90, kick a wedge under the end furthest the hinges then zap the screws out from bottom to top, holding the top of the door with one hand as you remove the last screw.

Refitting, I put the wedge at the hinge end to lift it the get the top screw hole to line up, foot against the bottom to stop the door falling over, top screw in but not crazy tight then move the wedge to the other side of the door to help the bottom hinge line up. One screw in the bottom hinge then work top down putting the other screws back in. Make sure the hinges seat nicely in the chiselled out areas of the frame before doing the screws up tight

Perhaps also consider new hinges/hinge pins and or screws; the drop may be due to hinge wear or screw pull-out - old style screws may not have deep threads which doesn't help in softwood

Ask a strong lad in the family to take door off. Then sand the recess the top hinge sits in. Then put the door back.

Alternatives are: sand the threshold to lower it, or sand the door bottom to "higher" it. 40 grit sand paper wrapping a thin block of wood or flat metal should work. Taking door off is best and should be no problem as it's a semi internal door.

Don't tell this guy to take the door off. If the hinges aren't loose he'd be better just whizzing underneath with his multitool. He did one for me last week and I'm not sure it's quite right:
