I have come across a few old pictures and one showed me with one of my previous motors.

Here I am with my '79 Rekord Auto in 1987.

Have you got any pictures of you with cars from your yoof?

Car I leant to drive in, was under age at the time, so dad showed me how to drive on the caravan site, a Hillman Husky. Dad's first was a Standard 8. I started with a mini, think caravan was a Sprit Aerial which was towed to start with using the Standard 8. My dad borrowed his brothers caravan, home made I think, he use to tow it with a motorcycle and side car. The ball was on the caravan and the cup on the car, and you screwed it down onto the ball.

From May 1980.
That was my uncle's 1600E He had it from new, I think I paid £250 for it.
Yes, the Hb was mine too. But, the bike was my mate's.

I might be nostalgic for a matchbox toy car but gold / bronze with a brown vinyl roof is the best combination. If / when I win the lottery will have a Jensen interceptor remanufactured in that combination.

First one I ever got the use of, was my mum's Reliant Rebel. 750cc of brute power (all 35 horses)! Ended its life with a 1600 Ford Crossflow motor in it.

It got comprehensively panned, but I adored the 164.
Really wanted one after I had to sell my 'sud, but couldn't afford it.

The 6 speed manual in some models (was it the Q4?) was aptly named. "Quick! Getrag!"
 
A vastly underrated car, IMO. That one is still with me. It's my 4th. Their lack of popularity kept the prices down. Believe it or not, I gave £600 for that, in 2009! Values are starting to climb, now, but still low, compared to other similar '80s cars. The problem was Saab's insistence that it should be front wheel drive. That riled the die-hard "Alfisti", meaning that it was shunned by Alfa enthusiasts for not being a "true" Alfa. It was basically, a Fiat Croma in an Armani suit, and with an absolute jewel of an engine. The last Alfa-designed car before the Fiat takeover. (Also sold as the Saab 9000 and Lancia Thema - one version of which, had that absolutely gorgeous Ferrari-designed V8 in it). That said, the Busso V6 in the Alfa, is one of the all-time great engines. 200 horse, straight out of the box, in the days when Ford were selling a 3 litre V6 Granada with 140 of them... Long-lived too. I got a quarter of a million miles out of my last one before I broke it, and I still have the engine as a spare!

Over here, too much damage had been done by the rust scandal from the 1970s. They tried SO hard with the 164 (and they were at least as good from the rust point of view, as any Merc or BMW of the day, IMO), but it was too late. Lancia pulled out of the UK market altogether, and Alfa never really recovered. I think they must have lost money on most of the ones they sold. The build quality was excellent, but they couldn't charge "Mercedes money", even though, they were incurring "Mercedes" build costs.

And yes, the Q4 was an absolute weapon! Sadly, left hand drive only, but tidy examples of the Q4 are now changing hands for around £15k. Heaven help you if you trash a gearbox though! In fact, quite a few 164 parts are getting very hard to come by, now.
 
Cracking motors both!

I liked the look of the late (C reg) CX and in particular the Familiale.

The CX was the last true Citroen before the merger with Peugeot. The estate also holds the most mundane record in the auto world. It has the most sun visors: 6!

I don't agree with the rear drive Alfa fans.

I think the front drive Alfas are a hoot to drive: at least my '78 'sud Super 1.3 was! The flat four was a stonking lump!

When I insured it, it was in the then top insurance group: 6. Other 1300s were in much lower groups, but this thing went like siht off a shovel! And that exhaust note!

My favourite 'sud was the Sprint, of which a mate of mine had a 1.5 example. Gorgeous looks!

I only drove one rear drive Alfa and that was a 1981 Giulietta where I believe the 'box was mounted at the rear for better weight distribution and that was good. However, the 'box linkages made for a clunky shift, not what you want in an Italian car. The one thing I do remember was a bonkers rev counter that went anti-clockwise!

If I had some spare money, I'd fill my life with many older cars, starting with a load of Alfas!

I'm a bit young at 32, but have a huge appreciation of classic cars (I now have a Singer Gazelle). My first car was a Vauxhall Corsa B (given to me by my late Grandmother). I got knocked for having it, but it took me something like 20k miles over the course of less than two years and never failed me. I later did get physically knocked in it and it was written off. This would have been around 2011. I really did love that car and looked after it.

After that I bought an X reg Mondeo ('Verona' spec 1.8 petrol). It was in perfect condition and I remember struggling to shift it for £500! How times have changed...

While looking for a pair of front fogs at the local scrapyard, I - by chance - found my Corsa looking rather sorry for itself. It had been completely stripped inside and there was little on the outside. I broke up with my first girlfriend in that car so took a minute inside to reflect :LOL:
