I've known a couple of older people get Shingles, which is apparently very painful and debilitating. The virus lies dormant in people who had Chickenpox as children.

Immunisation is available on the NHS, and the eligibility has just been widened.


"On 1st September 2023, the Shingles National Immunisation Programme will change, and more individuals will become eligible for a free shingles vaccination on the NHS.
From September, you’ll be eligible if you’re:
− 50 years and over with a severely weakened immune system (severely immunocompromised)
− Patients receiving a stem cell transplant may be eligible at a younger age. Speak to your specialist
− Turning 65 years old – you’ll be eligible from your 65th birthday

If you’re 70-79 years old you’re eligible now"

Quite a big trial in China


"The trial included almost 6,000 participants randomised 1:1 to the RZV or placebo group and followed in an observer-blind design. No cases of shingles were reported among the participants who received RZV, compared to 31 cases in the placebo arm."

Nonsense!

I'm sure you will find the majority of folk in that age bracket will be happy to have a jab.
 
Blimey, so that’s shingles, flu and covid jabs I’ve got coming!
 
Each year, approximately 750 cases of shingles are diagnosed by GPs per 100,000 people aged 65y and over in Wales (Data taken from Audit+ (2023)).

In Wales approximately 60 cases of PHN are diagnosed by GPs per 100,000 people aged 65y and over each year (Data taken from Audit+ (2023)).

During April 2021 to March 2022 there were 90 people aged 65 and over admitted to hospital with shingles (Data taken from Patient Episode Database Wales
 
My Gran had it. One side of her face was permanently mad-itchy. You couldn't actually see anything but it drove her nuts until she died.
