'Unhelpful posts' ??

Original post about off topic posts now totally off topic.

To be more correct, the OP was (and still is) actually about 'unhelpful posts' - which are not necessarily 'off-topic' !

However, there is no doubt that this thread has been 'ruined', by going off on a tangent, but that was not of my doing. It all started when, back on page 2, ebee wrote:

It happens extremely easily, but it has 'ruined' (distracted from) the intended discussion about people who post messages which merrily moan about other posts.

That certainly remains the intended subject of the discussion.

However, "unhelpful" is obviously a pretty vague concept, about which individual opinions will undoubtedly vary considerably.

I was really thinking of posts which do not really 'help anything', not even an off-topic discussion which had developed/evolved. In my opinion, post which just moan about posts come into that category.

It would be if I had said that generalisations are "never true", but I would like to think I've avoided it being a generalsation by merely saying "very rarely true", haven't I? In my book, a generalisation applies to 'everything', not 'nearly everything'
