Am biting the bullet and having my very old Baxi Bermuda back boiler replaced with something new. Hopefully this summer.

I know it's going to be a big job and a lot of upheaval but just wanted some opinions on where to get quotes from.

The local bloke that does the yearly service recommended going to British Gas and then getting some local quotes as well.

Are British Gas expensive and/or any good? I guess they should be but worth asking the question to get people's experiences.

Any other recommendations of companies to use?

My yearly service bloke is close to retirement and not interested in these big jobs but also didn't know of any local gas engineers that he would actually recommend.

That didn't sound promising so was thinking of going for a reputable company. Just trying to work out who is truly reputable.

Thanks

British Gas are hit and miss. Definitely obtain some from local engineers. Any ideas on what you want? Maybe advise what you currently have, eg one/two bathrooms, x amount of users, expectations et al.

It's a 3 bed mid terrace house with single bath with Aqua Lisa Quartz digital shower over the bath (I know this will require a cylinder).
Our problem is where to put the replacement boiler.

My gas service engineer said that the loft would be the only real option.

There is a larder cupboard which could house a boiler with flue out to the back garden but it would be close to the back door. Guessing that wouldn't pass regs???

Regardless of locating the new boiler I guess I just have 2 choices: condensing or combi?

The lack of cylinder with a combi would mean I'd have to replace my nice Aqua Lisa Quartz digital shower which would be a shame.

Also, I quite like the emergency backup that you get with a cylinder immersion heater.

Any idea of very rough price ranges I'd be looking at for the job?

Always a bit hit and miss with local engineers too. I know of two that I wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

BG will give you a fairly average quality install for a premium price.

Your digital shower doesn't have to have a cylinder, it can work perfectly happily off a combi boiler.

The flue needs to be 300mm from your door.

All modern boilers are condensing. Some of them are combis, some are system boilers, some are heat only.

What's your nearest town? Might be able to recommend someone, you never know...

Done same for client a while back

Fitted Intergas combi, disabled the backBoiler, she kept the fire. Heating side ( radiators) was open vented ( not pressurised)
No issues

Aside from British Gas and and small local companies.
Any big companies like British gas I could try for boiler replacement?
Have British gas coming Monday but feel I need more quotes.

Are Boxt any good for example?

The big companies like Boxt etc all use fairly low paid subcontractors to do the work. If you're happy with a white box being chucked on the wall with the bare minimum of commissioning carried out by someone with a complete lack of understanding of, or interest in, efficient setup then they're fine. If you want the boiler to actually run at something approaching the efficiency on the data badge, with the boiler optimised to run on the system it's fitted to, they aren't the ones to go for.

Or, to put it another way, I wouldn't have any of them in my house. VitoEnergy, on the other hand, I'd very happily have. I know they will do a first class job.
