I'm painting walls and skirting boards. I paint the wall first, and let it dry for 24 hours
and then i put masking tape over the bottom of the wall, while i paint the skirting board in a different colour

Once thats all dry, i take the tape off the wall

And it tears off big chunks of the wall paint with it. I end up having to repaint that section of wall, very carefully to try to prevent the bleeding, sometimes i fail

this doesnt feel right. This stuff exists for protecting paint from bleeding, i must be doing something wrong. Surely the adhesion shouldnt be strong enough to strip paint, but the stuff i've got sure is

this is the specific tape i'm using, in case its relevant

any advice?

You need low tack/delicate surface masking tape and let the paint dry longer before before using it.

Yes the Frog tape is very good, they also do a yellow low tack one but I've always found the paint can bleed under it. It does beg the question why is your paint peeling off, is it the tape pulling it off or is it actually that there's something else going on ....

Theres nothing else going on, it is absolutely the tape, this stuff i'm using is STRONG. It sticks hard enough to skin to be a bit painful to pull off, ive got some red marks

Can't seem to find frog tape wide enough, i wouldn't want to use less than 50mm wide, since i need to use stuff like this as a barrier on ceilings while doing roller paint on walls, its gotta be as wide as a roller. I will try to find a different brand advertising "low tack"

But in general i was asking less about products and more about technique. Is there a certain way to remove masking tape to reduce the damage it might cause?

I use this:

Peel it from the top and pull carefully down&away from the painted surface...best after letting it dry for a day.
I've a preference for using a 3mm thin piece of wood as a guide for the brush in some areas. It saves time and works well enough with a steady hand. Corners can be an issue but you can stick together a swift mitre easy enough.

This poster only uses a roller to cut in by the sounds of it Odds, hence the need for extra wide low tack tape (y)
