That would be stupid as every person escaping their country would have to stop in the neighbouring country……which would result in neighbouring countries being overwhelmed and the region collapsing resulting in more refugees.

Many do stay in neighbouring countries, Turkey has 4m Syrians, Poland has lots of Ukrainians.
