Unexpected? Not by me or anyone else with a brain.

Why is this “unexpectedly”

Anyone with 1/2 a brain realises that this dumb government has sucked ALL the confidence out of the business community AND consumer confidence is falling fast
Stop crying

Labour are having to sort out 14 years of Tory power including a disastrous Brexit.

Of course you can always vote Reform and see a massive run on the pound

Reference for the deliberately misunderstanders on here. The bold italic is directly from the BBC News website this morning and the normal text are my comments.

"The fall in economic output was mainly driven by a drop in manufacturing, the ONS said, while retail sales were "very weak".
Due to the fear and distrust of Rachel and labour people are holding on to their money

"Oil and gas extraction was down, while car-making" "and the "often erratic" pharmaceutical industry were weaker, the ONS said."
Net zero nonsense. --- The covid money making scam is over

"The services sector grew overall in May, with legal firms recovering from the impact of changes to stamp duty thresholds the previous month."
People rushing at the last min to buy houses before the end of the stamp duty change, so next figures will be down for this - which is the only thing stopping the 0.1% being worse

"The contraction in the economy in both April and May shows the outlook for growth "remains fragile", said Hailey Low, associate economist National Institute of Economic and Social Research."
Odd this one because if it were a conservative government then the headline would be THREAT OF RECESSION

"Government U-turns on spending cuts such as on welfare have eroded the financial buffer it has to cope with economic shocks, she added."
Like I said above. Due to the fear and distrust of Rachel and labour people are holding on to their money

"With businesses scaling back hiring intentions after wage and tax rises, and "strained" public finances, prospects for growth "remain muted in the medium term" Ms Low said."
Exactly as people on here have been pointing out

"Unexpected? Not by me or anyone else with a brain"

So you finally agree that the damage done by brexit is very difficult/impossible to rectify...

There's hope for you yet (y)

Maybe, but Italy has a populist right wing Prime Minister, albeit overseeing a coalition, and their fortunes haven't been too shabby.

Do you know what economic policies they have implemented? It's not something I have followed at all.

No idea. But my barber informs me that their rail system is much better and cheaper to use than ours.

Maybe Mussolini was playing the long game?:LOL:

Italy's rail system heavily subsidised by the state! So of course its better than ours. Can go on their trains in France as well now, as SNCF are allowing competition on their railways. Cheaper than SNCF, better service and real food that you can actually eat!

I have now done a bit of Googling, and it looks like there hasn't been any real change in economic policy under the Meloni government. So, no slashing taxes and increasing spending to spook the markets like Farage has planned.

You're completed deluded if you think people still have money to hold onto after 14 years of corruption.
I can't remember the last time I had disposable income to "hold on to". Everybody I know, bar a few forunate people in high earning jobs, are in the same position.
People are not spending because they have no money. It really is that simple. And the reason is that the economy was severely weakened by the previous government.

Not saying I necessarily agree but this is how it's presented. There has also been a reduction in corporation tax.
