Scampton would have been ideal; asylum applications could then have been processed on-site (with a genuine will from the Tory government at that time), but hotels became one of the few alternative options when it was turned down.
I've just had a look. The RAF Scampton plan came after the hotels policy was already in place. It was for a maximum of 2,000 asylum seekers. It seems to have been dropped after intense local opposition. I wonder if that would have been different if the asylum seekers had been detained on site.

Reform want to leave the ECHR so they can use it to take away our rights.
If you don’t believe me, have a look at Farages hero, Trump.
Blunkett says we should copy the Germans regarding the ECHR. But it's not clear what the Germans actually did or whether it was effective.
