Mandatory ID cards (Brit Card) to be announced tomorrow

Starmer says today "people will not be able to work in the UK without a digital ID"

What about the self employed? Do I need to prove to myself who I am, to enable me to go and work for myself?
and Loophole no.1 appears.

To be self employed (correctly) means giving the powers that be a lot of identification.

What's different ?

No loophole, just not thinking it through.

I'm sat on the fence with this id card, can see it both ways. But I have a phone, passport, driving licence, credit cards, debit cards, bank accounts, vehicles with number plates, insurances etc and pay all my taxes and rates. What is so different for me ?

what law will require bob the self employed builder to be required to prove his identity when labouring as a self employed worker on a job?

when I hire a guy to clean my windows will I be required to verify his right to work and will I be fined if I fail to do so?

I think there are two schools of thought here:
1) its just another ID, so I don't see what the panic is about, the state already had my data. In which case, what is the point.
2) One single, mandatory ID, makes Identity theft a lot easier, it becomes a target for criminals and rogue states alike and it makes it harder to recover a stolen identity.

Nobody on this thread, has yet said why they like the idea.

#191 & #194
191 = we should have done it sooner
194 = what the PM said is true.

So you are saying it will lead to making the UK less attractive to illegal immigrants who come here to work illegally, without confirming to all the legally required checks that a re mandated by law?

I'm kinda leading you a bit with that last sentence.

We already have laws in place for LL and employers, requiring ID checks. Why do you think this digital ID is going to force those who employ people illegally to stop?

It’s interesting how the right (at least on this forum) are split. Starmy’s instinct to link ID to immigration seems to be paying dividends. I can’t see digital ID working across different government departments until everything is joined up below. I have a number of different passwords for different parts of the NHS as well as the GP surgeries. All have different IT systems. Many of the logins fail to work after s specified period if you have not logged in (why)?. The project involves a huge investment, the government will be milked by open ended contracts, and there is no way it can be delivered by 2029. Its reminiscent of the attempts to digitise NHS records, maybe it’s Kieth’s HS2.

Employers are fully aware of any illegals working for them. It is impossible for an employer to unwitting employ an illegal. They need to use specialised ID check providers or get confirmation from the Home Office based on information presented.

So the digital ID will do literally nothing to improve this situation.
