8mm v 10mm Toughened Glass

Good evening,

Im trying to find in Building regs a document relating to toughened glass.

Im converting a staircase from softwood to Oak. I'll be using a handrail and baserail that is pre-rebated for either 8mm or 10mm toughened glass.

The largest single piece of glass will be 1000mm long x 850mm high on the landing, whereas on the rake with a pitch of 41 degrees and horizontal span of 1509mm between the newel posts, there will be 2 sections of glass each having the long edge at 41 degrees measuring 901mm with a vertical height of 850mm.

Are there any tables that show the maximum tolerance size permitted for 8mm or 10mm toughened glass please? Or building regs docs.

I did my stairs the same but used not so long bits of glass and I used 10mm - can not remember why but it must of been for a good reason

Ask the glass supplier to specify. Its not in the regs.

I did and he said 8mm is ok

I have used 8mm on glass balustrades in the garden. Been there for years without any problem.

As the glass panels perform no real structural function then you might as well use 8mm. Another advatage is they look less "green" and the distortion of view is less
