You're attributing intelligence and strategic planning to Trumpf with both of those options.

I suspect the timing is not a coincidence. Russians are gaining ground (albeit not much), and they will be looking at energy shortages and blackouts throughout Russia as oil refineries and power plants are bombed. Ukraine is well adapted to blackouts (most have small diesel generators, and apps for when they will get a black out). Russians are not so well prepared, and this winter will see them experiencing them on a regular basis if the war continues as it is.
