Will all the faff I also split the base of the fill tube where you screw the tail into. So I will be buying another one. But can leave the tail with my washers in place and screw on a new fill.

Problem I have was with the original tail connection. I brought some new fibre washers but did not fit, i also have hundreds of different ones but none fitted.
It was a mess in there with old cotton thread seal and I can see the original washer. See photo.
I added some PTFE tape to my new tail and had it overlap the flat face very slightly and so far there are no leaks

I measured the size needed for a new fibre washer and its19.20mm with a 15mm hole. Does that sound normal

And you need to remove all traces of the old washer so the fitting is nice and clean before fitting the new washer.

Can't say I have ever used prestex tap con washers, but they look the same as any others.
Think I will find some from somewhere else. Some reviews are saying the 14.5 internal s too small and the 18.2 needs to be bigger, which corresponds to my own measurement that I took with a digital Vernier gauge
