What's the monarchy for?

Took me a while to work out why this was highlighted as a "similar thread".

It contains a single use of the word "democracy".

It's nearly 20 years old.

It got no substantive replies.

But it's "similar" enough to warrant being brought to our attention? Blimey.

Did you read my post? Follow the links?

Let the royals fund them if they want to keep them
But you've just disenfranchised the monarchy and turned them into private citizens.
Shall we rely on foreign owners to buy the property and maintain them for the nation - maybe the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia will buy one?
If we're lucky the National Trust can take them over and become funded through the National Lottery.

It's only nonsense if you think that having unelected people making laws, and an unelected head of state secretly and privately directing the actions of elected lawmakers, are perfectly democratic.

Those who see such things as harmful to democracy may not regard it as nonsense.

Since recent governments have been so prolific in saving money for the nation with the shrewd investments made on our behalf i'm sure an elected body of officials will act in all our interests.

I did.

Presumably, even though you're very keen that I should answer his question, you, like him, are not keen to actually read the answer?

In other words there is no evidence yours or anyone else’s democracy has been affected in any way shape or form, by the Royals.

There is.

The fact that you are not interested in it does not make it go away.
