All those things require investment.
Who is going to investigate the benefit cheats? Who is going to train the unemployed? Who is going to stop the immigrants?
 
There is lots of things governments do that bring little to no value. Every time we expand the public sector we make the U.K. a less competitive place to do business.

Every time public sector work is privatised/outsourced a few companies/rich individuals benefit, whilst the majority suffer financially...

Most of Europe has a higher percentage of public sector vs private, and they on the whole do a better job for their populations...

They've also worked out how stupid the UK has been over privatisation...

Because many of their publicly owned companies have invested in our private sector utilities and in effect subsidise their own utilities...

Why shouldn't UK consumers not benefit from owning our own assets instead of them being used for profit by foreign companies/governments?

Not all EU countries are like us. For eg. in Czech Republic (as is probably the case in much of central/Eastern Europe) immigration is neglibile. Instead they make maximum use of the indigenous population to fill all of the jobs. Doing a basic job will give you enough to live in a flat, pay the bills and have a bit spare. However, if you want to choose an alternative life on drink, drugs, whatever - then you also get to choose which shop doorway you sleep in tonight. It's the way it should be here - paying people who choose alternative lifestyles and inhabit a parallel existence is a disaster for the economy and society as a whole.
 
I've set out before how it's relatively easy to keep tax down if you have enough money to bother.
Lineker's 35m doesn't mean he's in the super rich who'd gain massively by going abroad.

I had a look ( and paid £2.75 to Wikipedia on the way). We have 150 odd Billionaires, and 3 million ish millionaires.
Numbers are hard to pin down, but around a third of the Billi's move abroad or move assets abroad, and that number spikes when there's a tax tightening. Tightening non-dom status felt right, but apparently it cost us money.

I would suggest that of those of us with mere millions who would actually object to marginally higher taxes, many could relatively easily get more money or avoid a bit of tax here or there. I know I could. So far I haven't sought to avoid paying tax, but at around 50% marginal rate, yes it's a bit irksome. Where it's as simple as doing X instead of Y, to avoid a bit then yeah, I'm leaning that way.
It's the people already doing two jobs on near minimum wage that can't do much about their net income, and that's wrong.
Take some VAT off fuel, but for everyone? 1.2m a year. Pah! Why not load it onto reducing rates for smaller energy users?

If, say we made pensioners with net incomes of 20k pa or more pay National Insurance, that would bring in about 5Bn.
That's about 0.4% of the total (1.2T) personal tax levy, or 1.5% of social welfare and benefits ( including pensions).

Or it would allow us to increase our defence budget by 7%. Yeah I'd vote for that.

I'm guessing if they were offering free housing, food, medical care, etc, etc, etc the young men who fancy a better life on the taxpayer would soon overcome any hurdles with the lingo. After all Sweden is also infested - and I'm guessing that not many Africans/Arabs, etc arrive there for a handout with a command of the Swedish language.
