Thanks Nix I gave the valve body a few carefully aimed whacks with a hammer and hey presto the problem appears to be fixed. I wonder if maybe I got a bit of grit in the new pipework and it jammed the valve, but anyway fingers crossed it will be ok now.

Thanks for advice Nixt. I think the timer is ok the wiring was a plug in connector, so I think the motorised valve theory sounds more likely. I am sure the timer is programmed ok because a light comes on to show heating or water has come on at the selected time, but the heating light...

replacement one is is direct replacement for the original which was the integral bosch twin channel electronic timer. I got the part number from Worcester technical help line

No the instructions state it resets itself, and I have checked and can feel the lever being moved by the motor when i switch between heating and hot water
