Thanks for the reply. I'm guessing by pointing that tube down into the water it creates a sort of syphon which sucks the water out quickly should the tank ever get too full??

I can hear the pump running for about 8 mins so I don't think it is that. There's usually a click from the boiler PCB (probably a relay or something) and then the pump turns off.
