Replace Primatic HW cylinder or go down the Oil Combi Route

My hope in changing the boiler was that it would be more efficient than the 35/40 Year old Trianco TRO. Equally does "they don't make em like they used to" Stand true with oil boilers?

Replace Primatic HW cylinder or go down the Oil Combi Route

Good point! But when will that realistically happen? We're planning on doing an extension/some major work in about 5 years so i'm basically trying to find the best/most cost effective solution to see me through until then. Chances are the boiler/HW cylinder will need relocating when/if we do...

Replace Primatic HW cylinder or go down the Oil Combi Route

thanks for the reply. It was stored inside the house after being removed last year. At about £500 compared to £4k could the parts not be replaced as required? I appreciate this might not be the text book way to do things! Forgetting about Used vs new, Is the concept of fitting a Combi a good...

Replace Primatic HW cylinder or go down the Oil Combi Route

Hi All, I had a thread going before Christmas about replacing a leaking bathroom Rad on an ancient gravity fed system and the general consensus was to replace my Primatic Cylinder at the same time. I Still haven't got around to doing anything but one evening a new idea came into my head... Oil...

22mm pipe and 3/4" rad on Hot water side of old gravity system

Thats exactly what it is, the boiler is an old Trianco TRO 12/14 which must be coming up for 40 years old. The house hadn't been lived in for 5 years before us and it fired straight up. I'm thinking an oil combi might be the answer when the time comes to free up some space in the bathroom. The...

22mm pipe and 3/4" rad on Hot water side of old gravity system

Having had a little read up it sounds like a small 18l (ish) tank might be sufficient in the loft? I recon i could get one of them up there along with the associated pipework easy enough.

22mm pipe and 3/4" rad on Hot water side of old gravity system

Would i not need a fill/expansion tank in the loft? It sounds like thus might be the way to go tbh. I'll get the plumber back to drain down and refill the system in the meantime. I'm also still trying to get my head around the draining/refilling of this bathroom rad thats on the hot water...

22mm pipe and 3/4" rad on Hot water side of old gravity system

Hmmm, thats good to know, i had a plumber add a couple of radiators recently and he refilled with inhibitor in the system! The trouble i have is the roof space is VERY shallow, at a guess about 500mm at the highest point so the main cold water tank sits above the cylinder in the airing cupboard...

22mm pipe and 3/4" rad on Hot water side of old gravity system

Last question! The heating side of the system is refilled via a primatic hot water cylinder, will the hot water side of things refill in the same way?

Agreed i was going to call and check first as it seems odd. Ta.

22mm pipe and 3/4" rad on Hot water side of old gravity system

Thanks for the advise guys, its definitely copper just a combination of crusty paint and a rubbish caliper not giving an exact measurement. I did see this radiator advertising rads with 3/4 inlets - https://www.rubberduckbathrooms.co.uk/600-x-600-double-panel-type-21-radiator-3712btu I know...

22mm pipe and 3/4" rad on Hot water side of old gravity system

Its a 600mm x 600mm rad and wall to centre of pipe is 54mm. The feed pipe is 21.7mm give or take(cheap calipers). I've come across a mix of imperial and 22mm in the house already.

22mm pipe and 3/4" rad on Hot water side of old gravity system

Its definitely 3/4 then, there is one thread visible at the edge of the rad which i measured with a set of calipers.

22mm pipe and 3/4" rad on Hot water side of old gravity system

Thanks, the thread that goes into the rad is about 26mm dia. IS that definitely 1/2"? I guess it doesn't matter if i'm changing the radiator my concern was more do i need a 22mm valve on this for flow or could you step down to 15mm to get a standard valve to fit. I'm assuming it must have been...
