    Wax dots on fuse?

That is the problem of the man purchasing the house. It's a sad day when the government starts to interfere so much in what we do in out own homes. I call it protection for tradesmen, and don't believe that protectionist measures have any place in business.

    Unwanted /unused cables and wires

Whats the rationale for cutting back - surely there's some merit in leaving the run in place, should someone need it again in the future.

    Microbore: pros and cons

Thanks - the system was installed in the 70s/80s, but the boiler was renewed by British Gas last year. It appears to work ok, even in a hard water area.

    Unwanted /unused cables and wires

Sure - it's just that I removed a redundant cable at both ends and just left it under the floor!

    Unwanted /unused cables and wires

Is it OK to cut the wire off at the source/ remove if needbe and just plaster over them without pulling the run out?

    Microbore: pros and cons

I've just moved into a place with a microbore CH system. Having never seen it before, I just wanted to learn a bit more about it. Why is it used? Is it any good? Etc.

    Renewing a consumer unit

Ta - I'll get on to them in the mprning and find out how much they charge.

    Renewing a consumer unit

So there's no need for me to pay a spark myself if the LABC are going to test the install?

    Renewing a consumer unit

I'm planning on renewing an old CU. Is this the right way to go about it? 1. Contant DNO and arrange for them to pull the incommer 2. Fit new board 3. Get spark to test installation 4. Get DNO to re-connect 5. Inform LABC

    Installing an RCD?

cheers. Deff the best way I think. For the sake of, what, £100 it's hardly worth the risk or the bother of changing a CU.

    Installing an RCD?

Don't worry. I am getting someone in to do this job as I've decided it is much too dangerous for me. Will an approved electrician be able to replace the CU without having to get someone else in to pull the fuse?

    Installing an RCD?

Yes, well. Given that I'll be having the whole think checked over anyway, I'm not keen on paying twice. The way I look at it is that you can die from many things. Getting in the car, or in my case getting crushed by a locomotive. In the grand scheme of things, is there really much risk...

    Installing an RCD?

Well, the law it maybe but.... I don't think I'm going to go to jail for pulling a fuse, somehow :? Let's be honest, it's rather like the law says that you aren't meant to do such and such with BT wiring. But plenty of people do and the jails aren't full of them, are they?

    Installing an RCD?

So the best course of action would be to change the whole CU? I really don't intend to pay anyone to remove a fuse.

    Installing an RCD?

Hi, I see. I must admit that we had the RCD on the whole board in my parents house without any tripping on the lighting or heating circuits. How common is this problem? I could change the CU, but am planning on selling the house soon anyway, so am not too keen to spend more than I have...
