Quick update - The Seimens dishwasher is still going great 5 and a half years on, quality seems to have paid off - unless this note jinxes it of course. Hope the story helped somebody in a similar situation.

As for protection, this has tripped out a couple of times in the past but equally the fuse wire (5amp lights) has also popped a couple of times without this tripping.
