Aha, I hadn't thought of that! Cheers John. (y)

Ok, I'll do that for 2 hours (or however long it'll take to hit 30) - but Sentinel say 2 hours is the minimum and X400 can be left in for up to 3 weeks. I thought if I could run the pump for 24 hours non stop it would give X400 a better chance to work. Can I run the pump continuously without...

I've bought some X400. The instructions say to run the central heating system for a minimum of 2 hours at 'normal operating temperature'. The problem is the weather is so warm that I think the house will get up to temperature long before 2 hours and the pump will then stop (therefore the X400...

Anyone know if a nut splitter will chop through a 15mm valve nut (the old ribbed variety**) without damaging the copper pipe? (** like the one on the right here).

Are you saying a filter isn't worth it? I agree about flushing outside. I've just flushed all the downstairs rads with enormous amounts of water and each one had enough sludge* to fill a couple of baked bean tins. (*Weird stuff when it dries). I've also flushed one upstairs rad - not so much in...

How long is it - an extra year? Btw, I just realised that the Ideal filter is the same thing as the Fernox TF1 Omega - they've just got different names on the casting. https://www.fernox.com/sites/default/files/product_images/hvac/62248-tf1omegafilter-slipsocket-001-uk.jpg...

Thanks to both. I think it'll have to go near the pump - there's definitely not enough room for it on the return pipe at the boiler (not with easy access anyway). That TF1 Omega looks pretty good, cheaper than the Ideal one as well. I've had 4 more rads off since my last post - they've been...

Blimey, that yellow one looks like it came off a battleship. I don't have much room to fit it in near the boiler - presumably it could go on one of the 22mm pipes in the airing cupboard instead? I think maybe I'll stick with the Ideal one - it looks fairly compact...

Can't drive anywhere at the moment - car is off the road :( I'm confused re the filter - have you got a link to yours?

Thanks for your info John. I've only got a few days to run the system with cleanser in (X400 or whichever) because I'm having a new boiler fitted on 4th September. The X400 (or whichever) won't arrive til Tuesday 29th, hence the plan to run the old boiler for 6 one-hour bursts. The new boiler...

I've got a 10-radiator open-vented system. I've drained it down and some of the water (15% perhaps) contained black sludge. I have taken one of the radiators off and flushed it through outdoors with mains pressure water. I'm happy that this rad is now clear but the other 9 probably aren't, so...

    What is this noise??

I agree - judging by the appalling noises its making, the pump needs replacing ASAP. I think the existing pump is a fire risk so I'd shut the boiler down immediately (off at boiler itself and MCB/RCD off at fusebox) and I wouldn't fire it up again until a new pump is in place. I'd also replace...

    Removing olive from rad tail.

What about these (whichever length suits, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30mm, etc) - https://www.toolstation.com/shop/p24460 / http://www.geyser.co.uk/pipe-extension-piece-shiny-chrome-between-valve-tapping-10mm-p-1825.html There's another range available that's similar in style to the one in your link - but...

    What is this noise??

Perhaps one of the valves either side of the pump is shut? It sounds a lot like this. Or even this (play from 52 secs ish).

    Removing olive from rad tail.

Jon, Does that tool leave the pipe in good condition, or does it crush it slightly where the olive has slid off?
