Totally serious question: aside from the obvious risk of falling - why not?
People working on their own roofs is honestly not an uncommon thing to see, around here at least.
Growing up it wasn't unusual for me to help my dad on our slate tiled roof on a tall 2.5-storey house, without any PPE...
My roof is really steep and needs quite a bit of manual work done on it.
I've got a ladder with roof hooks but I'd prefer to be able to move around the roof more freely but would rather not slip and fall.
I already have a professional climbing harness and rope so I'm wondering if anyone has...
Thank you everyone for the really helpful replies. I'm going to cost up the project and think about when I can start. Might be a job best left until spring now, but I'll post updates if anyone's interested.
Yes I am. Does that affect any building codes or similar?
Yes that's the idea. Just something to make the ceiling look less grungy. I did think about cladding the trusses although it'd be very tedious and I'm guessing hardwood would be too expensive. Paint would probably do, or if worst comes...
A few updates:
1. Turns out the roof is already boarded with OSB on top of the trusses!
2. The trusses are at 600mm centres.
3. Here are a couple of pics showing the trusses and some bracing:
Yes they are.
They're about 4m across if that's what you mean?
Yeah it would probably be...
Thanks woody, I've seen your replies on lots of similar threads before.
I wondered if I'd get away with self-supporting spans of OSB because it won't be under any real load since it's not supporting roof tiles etc. but you're probably right in that it's too much of a distance.
Instead of OSB...
My roof is [unfortunately?] in great condition so I can't realistically take that approach. Or at least it would be a huge amount of work if I did. Glad to know that boards are a structurally sound way to brace a roof though.
Edit: just found a relevant section in the NHBC standards:
diagonal...
I have an disused outbuilding (approx 10m x 3m) which I'd like to turn into something useful like a workshop/office/gym/etc. The building has a truss roof and currently there is no internal ceiling i.e. the trusses are all exposed.
I could put a regular flat ceiling in, but the height would be...
That might do nicely - if it can slide in between the monoblock and the concrete strip then it would stop the turf encroaching and shouldn't affect drainage.
I might order a small length and give it a try - thank you!
I have a large monoblock driveway and patio area whose edges total about 100 metres against grass.
The grass tends to overgrow on to the monoblock which looks ugly and then requires regular trimming with an edge tool which takes ages.
The monoblock is not separated from the grass at all...
