Should I replace the overheat thermostat because I have had to reset it a number of times and have read that there is a finite amount of times it can be reset before the trip temperature decreases? Also would this be a job for an engineer or could I do it myself?

I have tried in vain to get a uniform finish on some interior pine doors but after 3 coats of ronseal wood stain they still look streaky. I/ve sanded down between coats etc. but am lost as to what is going wrong - any sggestions and remedies.
