Recurring drain blockages in tenement - any options?

Hi Bernard unfortunately in Edinburgh these drains are treated as private property & the council won't get involved. Tried several times but they say their responsibility starts at the manhole beyond the yellow one in the diagram (not shown in pic).

Recurring drain blockages in tenement - any options?

Hi - if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it... I've been getting regular (3 times a year) sewer fumes through shower & bleachy bubbles / gurgling in my toilet. I'm in a ground floor tenement flat, with four storeys above me. Had a CCTV survey of drain last week and no structural issues...

Botched finish on floorboard spot repair

Sigh, makes sense. I'm still surprised though because I've sanded a test board very heavily and no matter how deep I go it's not showing the same darkening effect with Osmo. Maybe my initial sanding techique lifted the grain, causing deeper discoloration? Anyway I need a fix. What about Osmo...

Botched finish on floorboard spot repair

Hi - another grand cockup by me that I just want some advice on... I needed to use a bit of woodfiller on my floorboards last week and when sanding it down I obviously rubbed off the sheen. So I shopped around for a suitable finish to touch it up with, and I opted for Osmo Polyx Hard Wax Oil...

Options for fixing this uneven subfloor?

Hi - one year on & locked in the house I finally got round to attempting this fix... I removed the skirting and fireplace trim at far end of living room and added a nice big expansion gap. Sure enough my contractor hadn't bothered doing that, and in fact it had started to cause cupping in the...

Best way to fit trim around fireplace to allow for expansion / contraction?

Hi, I recently had to add expansion gaps to my living room perimeter as my numpty contractor failed to do so, and it was causing my solid wood floorboards to cup in the summer months. I used a multitool to cut off the edges after removing skirting & fireplace trim - all good so far. However...

Options for fixing this uneven subfloor?

Just a thought... Would a T-bar threshold be an alternative, albeit less aesthetically pleasing fix? (Not sure if the subfloor differences make this problematic)

Options for fixing this uneven subfloor?

No direct sunlight anywhere in my gloomy Edinburgh flat :D But I do crank up that rad quite a lot in winter. If it's floating I'll breathe a sigh of relief for sure and the fix you described doesn't sound as bad as I'd imagined. Just to check - what do you mean trim underneath? I understand...

Options for fixing this uneven subfloor?

Hi Daz - I did wonder if that was a possibility but thought wonky subfloor more likely. In this pic the living room rad is always on while hall one always off. Maybe that caused it? Can't remember if it was like this two years ago when I did renovation. Would lifting the skirting on the far...

Why mock PVC sash & case "boxed around" original frame?

Hi Notch & Ronnie - thanks for your replies! Yep there's four more storeys of bay windows above mine (see pic) so I'm sure they must be load bearing. If so and if the baypoles would require wider frames, that basically means I'd have to replace the windows right? (As they'd need wider stiles?)...

Options for fixing this uneven subfloor?

Hi Jobandknock thanks for replying! I just looked over my quote and re the hallway subfloor it's either 18mm chipboard or 22mm plywood with timber support - I think I went with chipboard but not certain to be honest. It was put in two years ago & no holes, but I can't say whether porous or not...

Options for fixing this uneven subfloor?

Hi - this video illustrates my problem pretty well: http://sendvid.com/1qt1mx0w Also attached two pictures to thread. Basically my floor is buggered at the crossover between my living room & hall. My living room subfloor is the original Victorian floorboards, while in the hallway it's a ply...

Why mock PVC sash & case "boxed around" original frame?

Hi - was hoping someone could help me understand what's going on with my UPVC replacement bay window. (I'm not looking to get anything changed, but want to understand why it's the way it is.) Basically I had 1980s PVC replaced with mock sash & case PVC windows a couple of years ago when I...
