    new cu

My consumer unit is an old wylex fuse unit, the insulation is perfect, the cables are twin and earth but the cable routes don't follow new standards. ie lighting circuits chased all over the place - no zones. I want a new consumer unit - RCD protection but no electrician will take on the job...

Yes I have seals etc but they are all marked and personalised as you know so just in case you were asking, no chance but thanks for that advice on part P, I'll get cracking on my job then.

    what is Part P

The link "ban all sheds" submitted was well written and even answered some good questions I had. I want to move some sockets on the existing ring main circuit (not special location) that are mounted on the skirting board (plastic enclosures). There is loads of slack cable to move it to 450mm...

    old fire place removal, Asbestos?

I have just moved in to a new house built in 1937 but in need of lots of work. This weekend I intended to just knock the old fireplace surround down and close the fire place off until I know what I want to do with it. It was an open fire place but not been used for years, when I knocked the...

    central heating earthing

I've had a central heating system installed, fed from an existing fused spur. I thought I was getting plastic piping through out but the plumber has used copper with several plastic joints throughout instead. If I am correct the wiring regs do not require you to earth each radiator (4mm sup...

    Alternative wallpaper stripper

I have just bought a house which hasn't seen any decorating for approx 30 years. I need to remove the "flowery patterned" wallpaper ASAP, it's giving me nightmares. However when I put the steamer to it the wallpaper came off and so did the 5mm of paster that it was stuck to. Obviously the...

Replacing old CU with New ??

Very intresting discussion, I hope to get some info helping my situation too. I am a high voltage electrical engineer , I am not an electrician or part P registered, but am familiar with 16th edition. I moved into a new house and the consumer unit needed changing (old fuse unit for a new RCD...

    Socket Height

I'm in the process of re-doing my kitchen too, all leagally within part P/Local council notification etc. Can anyone clarify the minimum distance from a sink to a socket. I know that a bathroom is 1200mm to a socket and 600mm to a light switch from the shower/bath. Surely this can't be for a...

    Please recommend a multimeter

I'm a high voltage electrical engineer and I suggest you stick with a fluke or even better a Metrahit. The metrahit is the safest I think, it has safety shutters on the lead inputs so you can't turn it to measure volts if your leads are still in the AMPS range! Don't buy the cheap rubbish...

I managed to get hold of another part P registered chap who said he can come and sort things out for me, thanks for all the info so far.

    Help please, electrical safety certificate

I seem to have got myself into a situation without even knowing it. I had a central heating system installed, while the plumber was busy he said he needed a second fused spur for the clock. I contacted an electrician who suggested I put one in and I need to change my consumer unit at the same...
