What sort of joist hangers should I use here please

Hi I'm looking to put a joist underneath some flat roof joists to give additional span support, but I don't know what type of hangers would be suitable, especially on the wall where the ends of the timberwork are shown (this is the end of another joist on the other side of the wall doing the...

UPVC window beading very close to reveal

Thank you very much for that (y) I did look before posting and the search results came up with nothing. Great tip on your post about thinning down the insulation too - I've just ended up buying some 15mm stuff because I couldn't think of how to cut the 25mm boards down neatly.

UPVC window beading very close to reveal

Hi I'm fitting some insulation and new PB to the window reveals but am concerned that it's going to finish far too close to the window beadings which could make a broken pane replacement very difficult. I've currently put 25mm insulation up there dry-fit to test and by the time 12.5mm PB goes on...

Ceramic hob stays on full blast

I doubt it's something you can repair yourself, unless you have a good knowledge of electrics/electonics. There might be some kind of reset sequence (like holding down a couple of buttons then applying power), but you'd need to find out the actual model number of the hob to see if that's...

Can SBR be used as a vapour barrier?

I'll be using these as I seem to have loads of them in my shed -

Can SBR be used as a vapour barrier?

Hi all Thanks for your replies. I think I'll use foil backed plasterboards, foil tape over the timbers where they join, and foam up the edges. And also bring a plastic membrane across the plywood section and up the front with that being all connected with foil tape too. The good thing is that I...

Can SBR be used as a vapour barrier?

100% correct there - it is a warm deck flat roof. I know we can get DPM in liquid form (i.e. Blackjack etc), and as this is going to be in a protected space then I'd be surprised if there isn't liquid VB too, although it's not the traditional method used.

Can SBR be used as a vapour barrier?

Hi I believe I need to put a vapour barrier above/within a small suspended ceiling I've made. The area will be used for kitchen things and I'm expecting I need to protect the main roof joists above from the condensation of cooking etc. Trying to thread in a plastic membrane is going to be...

Wiring oven and hob from same cable

No I'm doing this in my own house, but so long as it's done correctly then there shouldn't be any issues if money changes hands or not? I'll obviously do a proper cert when done.

Wiring oven and hob from same cable

Thank you very much for your replies guys. I have the ticket but not yet the experience and so it's reassuring to get a 2nd opinion from the real experts :)

Wiring oven and hob from same cable

Hi I need to connect an oven and hob, I've looked at the regs and calculations etc and can't see anything I'm missing or wrong, but if someone's kind enough could I get a second opinion please? Oven is 5.9Kw / 25A Hob is 7.4Kw / 32A Cable is 6mm T&E (clipped direct) which should allow max of...

Using OSB on studwork instead of plasterboard

Cheers Steve, maybe I'll use a thinner cement board as backer in that case as there's the depth of the backer + the tiles + adhesive to consider. Studs are 300mm apart so I'm sure that'll be fine. The wife *always* chooses the wobbly edged antique underground brick type of tiles - which makes...

Using OSB on studwork instead of plasterboard

Hi I’m rebuilding my kitchen and have to insulate the outer brick walls so I’ve put up stud walls with celotex between the stud timberwork. But I’m undecided what to put over the studwork on the inside face. OK so it doesn’t need to look pretty beneath the kitchen base units, but I’d rather not...

Protecting MDF cladding to resist the spread of flames

Thanks for all your replies. In the meantime I found this which gives the charts - https://hspfireprotection.co.uk/information-and-advice/4_fire-ratings-explained.html To me, if it's C-s3, d2 then that seems to translate to it being acceptable to produce a high volume of smoke, acceptable to...
