How best to tackle new plastering that doesn't appear great?

But before mist coating or after? I don't mind hiring a decent sander as there's a lot of plastering.

How best to tackle new plastering that doesn't appear great?

Hi When a plastering job (on new boards) has just been done, and the finish doesn't appear great, then what's the best way of dealing with it? Some comments I read say do NOT do anything until the mist coat is on, others of course differ. I can feel wobby undulations on my finger tips and...

How to identify if concrete blocks are 5N or 7N ?

    #### I'll close this question off now as the structural engineer has worked on assuming the blocks are just 3.6N types, and this calculates sufficient for hanging the beam, so I don't need to know about the blocks now and not sure if anyone else does. Thanks for your replies BTW! ####

How to identify if concrete blocks are 5N or 7N ?

Thanks for that, an online structural engineer is asking as we're wanting to attach a beam to the wall. If the blocks are not 7N then it seems the building codes require a spreader plate which would be very troublesome to install.

Buying a 2nd hand car instead of an EV

I'd rather walk than buy an EV, especially with some of that unbranded stuff coming out from China. In 5 years I bet we'll see a lot of abandoned EV's on the streets as people can't afford new batteries.

How to identify if concrete blocks are 5N or 7N ?

Hi, As per subject, how can I tell if some blocks I have here in a wall are 5N or 7N? They've been in place for maybe 30/40 years and ones I've taken out weigh about 18Kg each. I do know that 5N blocks aren't a new thing, but how can I identify the difference? Thanks Dave

How best to deal with plastered over concealed access panel

Thanks for that! Will give it a go. I also read it's best to surround the outer edge with scrim tape and fill in the gap between the outer frame and the PB to avoid it cracking there.

How best to deal with plastered over concealed access panel

Hi Just a question on plaster-over access panels and if anyone could help me know how to deal properly with these please? I'm unsure how to finish it prior to and once plastered. Instructions say to cut around the gap with a knife - but when everything is all plastered over how the heck do I...

Which way should these doors be hinged?

I'd vote for french doors opening outwards, and for summer held open with long cabin hooks. Then I'd put a side roller flyscreen on the inner reveals (flyscreens on outside get real mucky). Apart from considerations with sealing it's your house and your choice of the flow. Also in my mind a door...

What sort of joist hangers should I use here please

Hi I'm looking to put a joist underneath some flat roof joists to give additional span support, but I don't know what type of hangers would be suitable, especially on the wall where the ends of the timberwork are shown (this is the end of another joist on the other side of the wall doing the...

UPVC window beading very close to reveal

Thank you very much for that (y) I did look before posting and the search results came up with nothing. Great tip on your post about thinning down the insulation too - I've just ended up buying some 15mm stuff because I couldn't think of how to cut the 25mm boards down neatly.

UPVC window beading very close to reveal

Hi I'm fitting some insulation and new PB to the window reveals but am concerned that it's going to finish far too close to the window beadings which could make a broken pane replacement very difficult. I've currently put 25mm insulation up there dry-fit to test and by the time 12.5mm PB goes on...

Ceramic hob stays on full blast

I doubt it's something you can repair yourself, unless you have a good knowledge of electrics/electonics. There might be some kind of reset sequence (like holding down a couple of buttons then applying power), but you'd need to find out the actual model number of the hob to see if that's...
