Hi,

I've got one of those dual outlet connection boxes for the hob and oven and was wondering if it MUST use the surface mount pattress as supplied, or if I can directly mount the PRW217 on to a cabinet rail? - see pic -->

The surface pattress box makes the whole thing huge and all that passes through it is the incoming T&E. The PRW217 unit has a metal backplate and so I hope at worst case I could cut a neat piece of vermiculite to sandwich between if there's any issues with regs?

Yes I could cut out a big hole in the cupboard back board but I try and keep things neat and consider if someone in future needs to change the hob, but I can't find anything in the regs that sheds any light on it.

Thanks
Dave

Thanks and that's fair enough, although I've seen these mounted on 1G backboxes on masonry walls where the outlet obviously overlaps the size of the box, so I guess it's the fact that the unit would be mounted on potentially combustible chipboard which is the issue? If that's the case then wouldn't my idea of a small vermiculite pattress fit the bill?

Looking at the pictures, the part that overhangs when mounted on a normal backbox has a back plate. So it will form a complete enclosure when combined with a standard backbox. The special backbox just seems to be designed to give more mechanical support when surface mounted.

I don't think it can really be considered a complete enclosure on it's own without something behind it given the huge size of the hole in the back. Personally I'd be happy with a peice of some suitiblly fire-retardant material behind it rather than a complete box, but others may have their own opinions on that.
